Subject: Has anyone tried the new Cuil web search?

As stated in the linked article, a new web search service has been started up by a couple of former high-ranking google engineers.  I've tried it -- it looks pretty cool.  It's definitely flashier than google.  The results pages look better, IMO.  Heh -- I also like the color scheme.  Black, blue, and silver are three of my favorites.

It's worth a look:

my prediction: microsoft, having failed to buy yahoo, will now try to buy cuil in an
attempt to gain access to a relevant search engine.  there will then be a big legal
fight between microsoft and google involving $$,$$$,$$$ going to hundreds of lawyers.
google will win said fight, and, at the end of said legal process, both yahoo's and microsoft's
search engines will be even more irrelevant IMVHO.

p.s.  once the IPO is made, there'll be a pump-and-dump frenzy involving cuil prior to
the microsoft buyout offer.  just my tuppence, mind ye.  not a statement of fact.  don't anybody
rush out and buy the stock just yet.

Your scenario is possible.  But as you've indicated -- I don't know if it'll work out that way.

I will say that I doubt that google is happy about two of their former top engineers founding a competing search service.  Although perhaps google doesn't view them as much of a threat at this point.

It's also possible that cuil might just end up as another "also-ran" search service.

Still looks cool, though.  I like it.

I didn't like the fact that when I typed in my user name from here, it pulled up a readme from one of my products here with my real life name as well as my email address.

They've had a few teething troubles. See also related stories.

You should to suggest to the PTB that they mark those links as "nofollow", I suspect they won't, but it does no harm to ask.

Unicornst ( ) posted Fri, 08 August 2008 at 2:04 PM

**The link being "no follow" or not doesn't really matter since the entire name and email address was in the search paragraph. This is what's showing in their paragraph under the link:

** Product Title: Seth for M3 Author: Janet Lightner ... Product Title: Seth for M3 Author: Janet ******** (Unicornst) Author E-mail: Unicornst@sbcglobal.net Product Date: May 29,2006**
**
**Not that worried about the email since I rarely use it anymore. It got taken over by spam and java ads. But that above is taken straight from the old on line readme before they started the change of no email in the online readme. If you click the link, Firefox asks if you want ot download it or open it with notepad.

Pretty funny about the name.

obviously google wouldn't let 'em do the startup unless they were already prepared
to beat the crap outta microsoft, hence there may be red flags like ignoring the
robots meta tag, putting irrelevant images next to relevant results, producing dozens
of duplicate results that the client is forced to wade thru, etc.  then when microsoft
takes the bait, they suddenly find they're not only faced with a major infringement
suit from google, but they bought a white elephant that may also draw countless
image copyright and privacy suits.

I assume they can't find general members' personal info that was posted here,  which
the admins privatised to protect kids and avoid issues with stalkers and other denizens
of the grudge sites, even tho they seem to have picked up merchants' personal data.

AFAIK, Google's webcrawler doesn't fetch/index pages from links tagged as "nofollow".

If you put your name and email in something that's linked on a site that Google indexes, it's hardly surprising that it shows up in searches, especially when it's at the beginning of the document.
Moving that info to the end of the ReadMe ought to stop it showing up in the summary.

Hmmmm.  Based upon the tone of those Register articles, I'm not entirely certain that there aren't some grudges being expressed by the authors.  But I don't have a dog in the fight.

FWIW - I've found some things with it (cuil) that I'd not found using google.  I also understand that the cuil folks claim that, unlike google, they don't log your searches.

It wasn't Google. It was Cuil that showed it and gave a download link for the readme.  And we have regulations to follow concerning readmes. Far I know, the name is supposed to be at the top along with the name of the product. I've never been told different.

Since CUIL supposedly has indexed more than google this isn't surprising.  I've had one of my business names come up in a readme at 3D Commune using Google for a couple years now because they listed a resource in that file.  So even google reads and lists the readmes.

Readme files that are listed on line get scanned - this is why Renderosity had us stop listing our email addressed in the online readme.

I like cuil , I tried it the day they opened and find it's format easier.

Considering the way it indexes it will have the first bit of inof relevant to the search, google does that as well.

Ahhhhh....guess I got lucky or unlucky (depending on how you look at it) by not ever seeing that happen before. grin

Tried several of my usual searches in Cuil.  Got nothing meaningful
or else a few really basic responses.  Reminded me of what Lycos would
give in 1997 or so.   Impressive then, when the Web was brand new,
but wildly unimpressive now.

Here's the Popular Mechanics take on it --

http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/reviews/4275622.html

I tend to agree that Cuil's #1 advantage lies in the area of privacy.  Unlike all of the other search engines, they don't collect any information about you.  But how long that'll continue to be their policy, I don't know.  Google used to not collect information about you, either.

They might get their act together -- eventually.

it's just sad how microsoft is always getting set up for a loss nowadays.
it's like the party piñata at which everybody gets to take a whack IMVHO.

is there some way of letting us verify that they don't collect info?
otherwise I would just assume there's no expectation of privacy on the internet.
how could they make any ad money if they don't collect info?

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2008 at 5:43 PM

My assumption would be that if they say that they don't collect any information on their users, and it later turns out that they do -- then they'd be setting themselves up for some potentially serious legal problems.  As to where their funding comes from, I don't know.  Good question.

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2008 at 8:14 PM

their funding is well-known - from two of the VCs on sandhill road in silicon valley.
those guys will shell out the bucks for just about anything, if ya pitch it right :roflmao:
every search engine known to mankind has been forced to admit that they collect info.
it don't bother me none, as I ain't lookin' up bombs nor al qaeda.  but the only folks
being set up for a big legal action are in redmond, wash.  they never seem to get a clue.

Heh -- the forum post that you've made -- which contains that well-known group's name associated with a noun meaning "something that goes BOOM!" has already red-flagged your post with all of the various and sundry organizations & programs that you've listed.  Throw in a couple of terms like "Ruby Ridge".....and you'd really get their attention.

Oh, no!  :a_shocked: Now I went an' done it...........

As for the two VC's -- obviously, I'm in the wrong business.  I have an idea or two.  I suppose that it's time to take a little jaunt out to California.  Work on my tan.
