Subject: Poser can't find textures?

cujoe_da_man ( ) posted Sat, 16 August 2008 at 3:11 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 11:19 AM

Ok, some of my figures that I load have a problem finding the textures I've applied to them.  Even after I have gone and shown where they are, the next time I start Poser, it does it all over again.  Even going and setting a new texture and then going back to the original by loading it manually in the mats lab doesn't seem to help, how can I get Poser to stop doing this?

I got that problem just a few minutes ago with an old scene I loaded up.

In my case, it was because I had disconnected Poser from the particular Runtime in which the textures were located.

As soon as I added a Poser Library for that Runtime again, it was able to find the files once more, without me having to tell it where to look.

Hope this helps!

Are you using windows vista? In that case I got the same problems, it has something to do with the security settings of vista. I solved by making an external runtime outside the program-directory and saving my textures and models there.

ok, I should have explained better, I'm sorry.

No, I use winXP and the textures I am referring to are in an external set of folders, my own personal textures.  But Poser has developed this bug on certain figures and can't seem to find those textures until I show it where.  Then, if I go and replace those textures, then go back and re-load the textures it can't find, it still has the same problem.  And it doesn't seem to matter if I save the figure as a whole new file, it still can't find the textures.

  I hope that helped :P

Ah, I understand. The following is a possible explanation...

If you upgraded to Poser Pro, or Poser 7 SR3 recently, it handles file references differently to all older versions. (If you haven't upgraded yet, you can ignore the rest of this!) See this note from the SM support pages:-

Poser Pro and Poser 7.0.4 (the version you'll have after applying SR3) handle referenced files differently than earlier Poser versions. This doesn't change existing Poser installations, which can use the same Library structure they already have. In brief, Poser now writes 'relative' file paths whenever possible, i.e. the path to a given texture or OBJ file will be relative to the Runtime containing the file.

So if it's not saving the absolute paths for your texture files (which are not in any Runtime), then it still won't know where to look for them next time it wants to load them. I guess the answer would be to pop them into a Runtime/Textures/, and see if it works okay then.

Not saying that this is the problem but it might have to do with the creator, if they didn't use absolute paths for loading textures when they created the product Poser won't remember because it has a different path encoded in the product for locating the texture.

Did it ever work right or did this just start?

see, that's what's odd, it worked fine for the longest time, then I had to format my drive, but I put the textures in the same folders they were in before, the rest of my figures have no problem with their textures and they're in the same folders.  Now, I could go and remake the problematic figures, but the new problem is, some have very custom morphs that I can't duplicate... ie: Poser7's morph brush.

I was just curious as to maybe there was an .ini file I could edit or something I could reset

If you feel like it open up the cr2 and look in the bottom part where the materials are and start opening it up you should see some paths that point to the map...see if those really point to where your textures are.

I had a similar problem with Poser 7 / Pro
it was related to "!" symbols in the folders' names
(search the forum for my posts, it's a thread I started a few days ago)

hope this may be helpful

I'm having similair problems with Poser Pro and never had them in Poser 6. Some external runtimes are fine, while others give problems. I've found a simple solution to the problem, I've copied all the textures from the runtimes that gave problems to the main Poser Pro runtime folder and now the problem is gone, since that's the first place Poser Pro looks for textures when having problems.

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

Food for thought.....
