Subject: Pose a character to background help needed

I wish to import a jpg background into poser and then pose the character as desired for the background and then delete the background and export only the posed completed character as a psd file.   Is this possible? 

I've tried to import a background image but I can't seem to get the character to pose after it's imported and then I don't know how to delete the background.   Without the specific background that I want the character's posed for it is much too difficult for me to get the correct posing.  

I hope I've made sense what I'm wishing to do and am asking.  I'm still new at poser and have a lot yet to learn.   I don't know how to create props from a jpg background that I could use in poser to pose them nor what program is used to create props like that, even if that is possible to be done as well.

There is an option to include/exclude the background in the render settings. Go to Render > Render settings then on the right of the settings panel under Render Over select Current BG shader.

Under the Display menu there is an option to display or clear the background picture.

To add to Phil's comments. I can't think of any resson loading a background picture would stop your character from posing. I have done this many times without any problem. Of course when you save your work, if you want to edit it in future you need to save it as a pz3 or pzz, you can't pose a graphic file such as psd or jpg.

Poser is not particularly suted to making props, you are more or less limeted to scaling, morphing, and combining primiteves, though you can also delete facets in the Grouping Tool. To cerate more complex props you really need a modlling program such as the free Wings, Anim8tor, or Metasequoia LE.

Thank you for your help.  

I have another question if you don't mind that somewhat pertains to the backgrounds as well. How does one create text and import it into poser to be able to pose the character behind the text?   One example I would like to do with that is the character posed behind the text with the character's hands coming over the top of the text and leaning forward a bit as looking down to the front lower area.   Would the text have to be first created in a modeling program as lesbentley mentioned above or is there a way that the text can be created in photoshop and imported into poser to be able to do that?

The easiest way to add text is to do it in post processing after you have exported the image from Poser. Load the image in a Piaint program such as PaintShop Pro, or Photo Shop, create a new layer, add the text to the new layer, when you are happy with the way it looks, merge the layers.

You can have text in front of your characters in Poser by using a transparency map on on a Poser square primitive. I don't have time to go into detail at the moment. Perhaps someone else can jump in here and provide more information on transparency maps.

The green "Matrix"-style text in the foreground is a real 3d object, rendered in the scene by Poser.  As you can see, it contains opaque areas, transparent areas, bits in between the two and also casts shadows.  It is in fact very easy to do.  In your favourite art programme, create your text in whatever colour you like (in this case, bright green)., call this your "texture" image.  Then make an otherwise identical version where the text is white on a black background, call this an "alpha" image if you like; in the render, it will make your texture image transparent where the alpha is black, and solid where it is white, and will vary the transparency (as can be seen in the sample image) where the alpha image is grey. 

In Poser, create a flat square primitive, apply your "texture" image as the er, texture, and set your "alpha" image as the transparency map (Another way to do it would be to use the "alpha" channnel to cut through a solid colour/texture).  Press render and away you go - a text object.
