Aha! sorted it. this may help anyone else - one of my 'preferences' is to have new objects created with the last used material setting. well apparently when starting an animation the model becomes a new object and reverts to last used material.
so switching off this preference has solved it.
thanks for trying to help. guess i was the only one with this problem anyway.

now i can get on with animating my Battle wagon

Just as a sidenote to this issue of textures going to all objects in Bryce, this will also occur if you introduce a new homemade texture into an object without saving it to your materials folder first. It doesn't always happen, but it is hit and miss and from time to time can also cause Bryce 6.1 to crash as well.

I create a lot of my own textures for my Bryce work and I have learned this lesson the hard way on more than one occasion when I forget to save a texture into my materials folder before I try to use it on some object.
