Subject: Runtime Migration

If just got poser 7 and i still have 6 installed. Does anyone have any tips on moving the runtime folder over? Its 25gb and obviously takes a while. Afterwards P7 does not load.

Any hints?

Why don't you just add the runtime to your Poser 7 library?  Go to the library window and click the upper left folder until you reach the Poser 7 folder.  Click the + button on the bottom, the help text will say 'Add runtime'.  Also very large runtime folders just bogs down the program.  You should break the monster down into smaller, manageable runtime folders with specific content rather than 1 containing everything.

You can just link to your P6 runtime from P7 as you would with an external runtime setup.

By copying things over, I'm assuming you have everything installed into the base poser runtime? You may need to make sure that if you're doing a drag/copy routine of the folders that something P7 needs isn't getting replaced by an older P6 file.

That's all I can think of right at the moment...end of the day and my brain is getting mushy from work.

Never ever copy a runtime into Poser's main runtime. There are other files in there besides your 3D content. There are files are crucial for the correct operation of Poser and they change with each version.

You trashed your Poser 7. Re-install it.


Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

What I do is create runtimes for various things.
Such as I have one runtime for characters.
Another for clothes. Another for hair.
Another for props.  Another for body poses.
And one for mat poses.  This seems to work
for me.  Others have runtimes according to
characters.  Such as one runtime for Victoria 3,
with all the clothes, hair, poses, props for her.
Another for Victoria 4 with all her stuff.  Another
for Apollo Max, and so on.
But basically just create runtimes that are somewhat
organized according to content or theme

One thing that I've just started to do is preface each clothing item with the figure it is for, such as "V4 Bodysuit". I also do this with the matpose, material, camera, light etc. files. I also regularize the naming, for example, I change pose files named "MAT foobar" into just "foobar". In the case of products which have crs for different figures, I split them into separate folders, so something which has crs for both V3 and V4, for example, goes into two folders. Currently, I treat all flavors of A4/V4 as the same. I used to just preface each item with all the figures it supports, so something like Hongyu's Maiden Lingerie 2 would be A3-V3-V4 Maiden Lingerie 2 (HY). (I often incorporate the creator's name at the end if they are one I particularly like.) It does make it a little harder to find things for a specific figure, since it isn't in just alphabetical order by figure.

For pose folders, if the same poses support multiple versions of the clothes (for example, BATLAB uses the same UVs on all versions of a given product, so the same textures work on all of them) I create shortcut folders for each figure. (I use the Advanced Library for Poser www.neocron.lunarpages.com/library/ which handles shortcuts fine. I don't know if this works with the regular library palette.) When I have a texture expansion product, I put it under the main pose file for the product. So, for example, if I have "totally awsum by vendor_v" which is actually for the V4 basicwear, I put it under the V4 basicwear pose file.

For hair, I pretty much just keep them in one folder, since prop hair can be tweaked to fit just about any figure, and conforming hair tends to support most DAZ figures. (I use DAZ figures almost exclusively.)

I've got multiple runtimes. One is for DAZ products (and add-ons) only. Another is for utility type products, such as generic materials, environment props etc. A third is for most other creators products. A fourth is exclusively for models (figure morphs and mats, eye mats, nails, etc.), including hair. So when I want to go start with a new model, I know where to look.

Each of the categories in my runtimes is divided into subsections, and they are the same for each category. So, for example, in character I have models (subdivided into people and others), clothes, hair, articulated props, settings (buildings, furniture etc.), vehicles and so on. So if I decide to dress a character in particular clothes, I can find any props associated with the clothes in the props->clothes directory, and the mat poses in the poses->clothes. And if the clothing set comes with something which is grasped in a hand, I can find the hand in the hands->clothes folder.

A few categories are special -- poses, for example, has a sub-directory "figure poses", which is basically pose sets.

Remember you can move these things around -- I do that from time to time. What you can't do (safely) is move something from one runtime to another.

My advise is to buy PX Poser eXplorer by Dimension3D at the RMP. $10... works in the background but gives poser files icons based on their thumbnails and lets you load them in an open Poser scene by double clicking in the OS folder window, Explorer window or Explore alternate such as 2xExplorer which I use since it has multiple panes, bookmaks and a super fast search. I keep Poser pointed to the empty download runtime so it opens fast and load my content from 2xExplorer. Loads stuff faster than the Library Palette and without the fail rate in foinding attached textures and geometries... can also do tricks like load conformed with morphs and deformers. Also saves content into the OS or 2xExplorer folder window and lets you save into "collections" which I have never gotten around to dealling with. I find the store promo image for this tools completly mystifying but once you load and initialize it on you computer you never have to think about it again... you just brows to your content and double click to load it.Very fast.

My understanding is all those INJ/VIS/andREM folders must live in the runtime folder in the same sub-directory of your active Poser.exe for your INJ and REM poses to work right.

The !DAZ folder that contains the delta files for the INJ/REM should go into the main Poser runtime....specially for V4 and their newer figures with how they're doing them. Due to how Poser looks for those files, that's where it starts first....and if they're not there, can take a lot longer to load them.

The older figures, and Gen3 figures...you can put the !DAZ folder into the external runtime setup for that figure if you have a relatively decent computer...loading time is a few seconds longer on my new monster machine, but I just like everything outside of the actual Poser runtime so I don't have to worry about loosing things if I have to reinstall.
