Subject: library manager of some sort

Hi,

Is there a way, or an application that will let me see clearly what is in each of Poser 6 library.
I recently downloaded and added to the library over 2GB of models but where are they in the library is a hunt and peck situation.

There's got to be a better way.

Does anyone, someone have a better way of finding the file, the library item one is looking for in Poser 6?

I beg you.

A free software which can give you a look-see view into your runtime folders is P3DO Explorer.

I recommend to actually create external runtimes of your content divided into manageable categories.  One large runtime (2 gigs) will cause your program to run slower because Poser  needs to construct its library every time you open it.  I did the same mistake years ago, will never repeat it again.

I am downloading the free version as I type.  Any advantage to the paid for version?

And a more important and probably harder question to answer is how do I create external runtimes of my content?

Here's a quick and dirty way for external runtimes - Acadia has a nice, more in depth write up on them if you need more info.

Set up a folder on your harddrive - I have one called PoserRuntimes. (I also have mine divided up between commercial use and not-for-commercial use, just so I know what's what in a render)

Inside of my PoserRuntimes, I then have it divided up by figure (David, Aiko, Behemoth, etc) as well as separate ones for hair, lights/materials, and props of various categories. Then the appropriate content is placed in each folder as needed.

So here's a break down of my folder structure:

Harddrive-->
-----PoserRuntimes-->
----------Commercial-->
---------------David-->
--------------------Runtime-->
------------------------Geometries
-------------------------Libraries
-------------------------Textures

(rinse and repeat as desired)

As long as you keep the folders with the same internal Runtime-Geometries, Libraries, Textures routine everything should work fine. After you have all your files setup and organized, then all you have to go is open up Poser, go to the top of the library directory, and a plus icon should appear at the bottom to add the runtimes. Browse to the location, select the desired runtime, and you're done. (You will have to add each on separately...so keep that in mind)

Now, for some of the older DAZ figures, you can put their !DAZ folder with the inj/rem deltas in the external runtime. Morphs will load a tad slower if you do this, so keep that in mind.

With the new V4, you will want to put her !DAZ inj/rem delta info folder in the main Poser runtime, because she'll take for friggen ever to load. Everything else, her cr2 file and the like can go in an external runtime if you so desire.

Realmling hit the nail on the head.  I have a separate runtime for stuff that I work on from scratch.  Also have a special runtime for projects, those thoughful scenes that require special content for one time use only.  Afterwards, the content of the folder is either deleted or transferred to disk for future consideration.  What is important, keep your frequently used content together for easy access.  Use what is necessary for your project and then delete afterwards.  Always keep your purchased/freebie content in a safe place (disk, external HD, etc); don't unzip and delete them.  Usually the readme's will have specific instructions or special free offers.  You will be surprized how quickly your library will grow.

Can I put hair and props under David like the below?  Is there a problem with that?

You can organize your content in any manner you wish. The Geometries, Libraries, and Texture folders contain all the info that are needed to load a figure, piece of clothing, hair, props.

Hair and props and clothing and the like will be in the libraries folder - like so:

---Figure-->
------Runtime-->
-----------Geometries: (the obj files Poser loads)
-----------Textures: (textures for the obj files)
-----------Libraries:
---------------Lights
---------------Materials
---------------Props
---------------(etc)

As long as the zip file was setup right, the runtime folder should already be setup this way so that all you need to do is just unzip it to the location you want it to be at.

I can do up a better clarification when I get home from work in a couple hours if you need....sometimes my brain and my fingers don't always cooperate to everyone's benefit. 😊

I guess what I'm getting at is can you set up folders so that under David you have all his hair, all his props?  And then another folder that has Vicki and then under her all her hair, all her props
and so on like that for every character?

Yes, but probably not in the way you're thinking with how I've explained things. You won't need to create folders for the items, just the one folder to put each figure and their items in.

So hopefully I can explain this right.

You have 5 zip files, all with content for a specific figure - clothing, hair, props and the like.

  1. Make a folder for the figure
  2. Install the figure to this folder
  3. Unzip/install all the things you've downloaded for the figure into this folder.

That's pretty much it. If it's a freebie item...it may not always be zipped in a way that will install nice. Sometimes there's an extra folder that then contains the runtime setup and other items (I'm guilty of this setup on most of my items...) If there is, cut just the Runtime folder and paste it outside of this extra folder in your figure's runtime. Then just delete the extra folder. Then you should be ready to play with your new stuff in Poser.

Any content you buy should have things setup the way they're supposed to, and you can just point the intaller or zip to your runtime folder for the appropriate figure. I install/unzip things to a PoserTemp folder on my harddrive because often there's extra junk (DAZ installers) that I don't want/need and I clean things up before transfering to it's final home. This is up to you...and you may want to just practice with a couple files and get the hang of things before doing all your content all at once.

I can do a screen shot of my external runtime setup when I get home if that would help, just to give you an idea on one way it can be done. I have mine over-organized probably, but I know where everything is (unless I forget and put a WIP in the wrong spot....but it's usually with the figure so it's not too hard to track down).
