THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: WIP, street scene (I blame ICM for this LOL)

Just when I wanted to get back to photography after feeling a lack of Bryce inspiration, ICM blinds me with his *'magic of light'* challenge... which I might add, I entered a scene to. But it doesn't end there does it!! Be proud of yourself ICM, you started me on a new Bryce journey; street scenes!!

So here is a work in progress.
Just the road and pavement to start with. Both are made with terrains, and water added to create a bit of atmosphere.
I photographed real cobble stone streets, made height maps from them and used the photo also for texture.
Instead of curving the road, I used two water plains at around an angle of 3 degrees for the gutter water, and also slightly tilted the pavements toward the road. The whole thing gives the impression of a curved road surface with rather sunken old pavements.

The buildings as yet have no detail....coming soon.

That is looking good my friend.

Indeed..looks almost complete as is..dunno what but it does need a bit of something.. ...

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
The Sun comes up again

Update1: Created a shopfront and another building from terrain.

In photo editing software:
First I took a photo of the front of the building. Extracted a small area of the wall and made a seamless texture (see my tutorial on making seamless textures) and also select the doors/window displays for other textures.
Then I made a height map with the front of the building. To do this I selected parts of the building which would extrude. Starting with the parts that would extrude the most, I coloured them in the lightest grey, and then leading down to the least extruded part, and coloured that with the darkest grey. This takes a little time but it's worth it.

*In Bryce:
*Loaded the photo into the terrain editor and then added the appropriate textures. Added a simple 2D object for the doors and window display and placed them on the terrain. The terrain BTW, is standing on it's end as opposed to laying on the floor.

No proper lighting as such yet, have to build the entire scene before I see which lighting works best.

Very nicely done so far....what is the resolution of the building terrains?

Staticon ( ) posted Thu, 02 October 2008 at 11:42 AM

Wow! :woot:

That's beginning to look like a photo I took in the town centre once.

Nice work. 😄

Thanks.... The resolution is 1024, there was no need to have it any higher, and 1024, at least give me enough detail. If i's used, more i'd get the usual memory problems eventually. Quite a few more different building fronts need to be created and some distance buildings for the background. I would like to keep this as one render, but may have to eventually render a background seperate from the foreground..... But we'll see.

Made quite a few adjustments to the scene which has now been rendered in full.

Just uploaded another scene that was more fitting to my original WIP in the thread.

I still consider this a work in progress since i'd like to add more and more to it.
