Hello everyone,

I hope you have some champagne handy, because I am having a party.

My novel, The Second Skin, is now available for all the world to buy.

For those of you who entered the cover design competition, for those of you who have read the first chapter and wanted more, or sent me such good feedback, and for those who liked the short stories on my site, (http://www.helgarddebarros.com) thanks for everything.

I have one big favour to ask. If anyone does part with their hard earned money to buy my masterpiece, lol, could you please go back and leave a rating or write a review.

OK, enough with the talking, I am off to party!!!!!!!

Helgard

I forgot to add, do not buy the book on Amazon.co.uk, that is an older self published version, and is way to expensive. I have asked them to remove it, but it is taking a while.

Doc,

The version on amazon.co.uk is an older self published version, many mistakes, lol, and a terrible cover. It should be taken down...

The cover artist was our very own Jeremy R Reston, known to all of you as 'bigjobbie' in the forums.

Bravo.  I've been trying to finish a book for several years but teaching literature keeps spoiling the surprise ending for me...nope, I've no idea how it ends...yet.

Well done, and I hope you make a mint!

Helgard ( ) posted Thu, 02 October 2008 at 8:30 PM

Cedarwolf, the ending is always the hardest. I wrote the first 21 chapters in three months. The last chapter took a further six months, and about twenty rewrites to make sure it was really a surprize.

Lol, it was a surprize even to me...

On a sort-of related note, I've met Helgard and the photo on the back of the cover looks exactly like him.

There's another photo he uses without his beard, but I suspect that's his evil twin from another dimension. lol

The photo on the back cover is the one where I was impersonating an author. The other photo I use is my inner child, lol.

To the people who have bought the book, could you please send me a message and let me know what Amazon charged you for shipping. I am trying to get an idea of the shipping costs to various countries. For example, Amazon tried to charge people in South Africa $50 to ship one book, which is not acceptable to me, so I would just like to get an idea of comparative prices.

Thanks Doc,

$3.99 is acceptable, and a darn site better than $50+.

I have organised an online distributor for South Africa, now the only rpoblem is to get the stock to them... who said this was an easy business, lol...

It's fascinating to follow this conversation because we, here in America, never realize how inexpensive things are here in relationship to the rest of the world.

Helgard ( ) posted Mon, 06 October 2008 at 7:15 AM

Gini, the version on Amazon.co.uk is an older self published version that I made just to get sample copies to send to the publishers to get a deal. Unfortunately, there is no way to remove that from Amazon, but that one will never be available again, that price is way too high anyway.

Cedarwolf, I originally come from South Africa, and you have no idea how expensive things were for us. When I was a kid, I was paying five times as much for a comic as what a kid in the US was paying, and later I spent vast amounts of money buying CD and albums at rediculous prices, because of the import taxes and shipping costs, so I am very aware of trying to get the price of things down for the territories that are rather far from everywhere else, like South Afriuca, New Zealand and Australia.

Congratulations on getting your hard work published Helgard! I hope the book is a huge success for you!

That cover image you selected is great. Congrats to the artist!

You're so right about South Africa being so expensive for imported goods. I bought about $100-worth of technical books from Amazon a few years ago, and ended up paying $140 to get them shipped to me. That one really burned my rear end!

PS. It's amazing how you build up a vision in your mind of what people look like when you read and engage on forums. You look nothing like what I imagined Helgard.

Helgard ( ) posted Mon, 06 October 2008 at 8:51 AM

Did you imagine I would be less handsome and good looking than I actually am????

I have bigjobbie (Jeremy Reston) to thank for the cover artwork. In fact, I have heard more praise for the cover art than for the book itself, lol.

PS If anyone in America ever tries to order some music or books from South Africa that is not available in the US, they are in a for a bit of a shock, lol, it costs more to get stuff out of SA than to get in into the country...
