Subject: If $$$ is not an issue, what computer are you going to get?

TheOwl ( ) posted Wed, 01 October 2008 at 4:43 PM · edited Thu, 21 November 2024 at 5:00 AM

Quite an interesting question eh?

Lets say you got a load of money and you will invest it in a computer to smoothen your workflow in Poser and other 3d applications you are working on.

Post links or type in the manufacturer, specs and everything you want in a computer has to have when you buy it.

Please reply because I will need your suggestions in a decision making I have to do.

I have no idea about specs, but I would want something extremely fast! I would want thousands of gigs of hard drive space.  Thousands of gigs of memory.  Oh, and did I mention fast?!

Hmmmmm, if money was not a issue.

I think I go for the IBM Roadrunner.

For a mearly US$133-million, I think he can do my renders fast enough

I'm glad you said computer, and not PC. Because for me the answer is as plain as the nose on my face... a fully spec'd Mac Pro.
My nose is not plain, as such - it's just pretty darned obvious.

BTW - maybe we can get our hands on some of that bail-out money......and use it to buy a Cray.

To bring the discussion a bit more mundane:

I torture myself every so often buy going to the Dell Outlet, set the dropdown for Precision Workstations and max out the RAM....

Oh to have $10K for a refurbed workstation 😄
Then I go to Alienware and max out the most expensive desktop they offer.

How much would you think the current content paradise's contest prize would cost?

A really cute Chobits (persocom) is what I'd get if money was no object.  ;)

On subject, I'd probably run down to the Best Buy and pick up the best HP I could find.  They are good enough and a fair price.  I haven't heard many good things about Dell lately and Gateway has gone downhill.

One other thing you could do is start reading up and buy all the parts yourself and put one together on your own.  You can generally end up with a computer that is just as good, but a little cheaper.  I'd do this, but I've been too lazy to keep up with technology lately.

In the realistic sense, is Mac Pro the best choice perhaps? I just saw the site and it starts on $2,799. Or it is okay to use a PC because its cheaper?

I wonder what Pixar is using?

I just went to tiger direct
~550 for the processor
~180 for the memory (4 x 2 gig)
~210 for the 3 hard drives
~150 for the graphics card
~100 for the keyboard/mouse, more if you get the nicer models for gaming
-I can't find a good price on that moniter, so I'm guessing around 400 or so.
-Then you'd need all the extras.

One question: are you a PC gamer?  If you are, I think you need to stick with the PC or else you are going to have to install windows on your mac.  If you aren't into gaming then there really isn't that much difference between PC and Mac.

  1. Mac Pro gets my vote, as stated earlier
  2. Pixar uses SGI IRIX, Sun Solaris and Red Hat Linux, though they are phasing out the SGI boxes. During production of "Finding Nemo", they used 3000 cpus to render.
  3. Poser has been compiled for Cray?!

TheOwl ( ) posted Fri, 03 October 2008 at 3:25 AM

You mean Poser won't work on a Cray?

Don't know....
For $23,500 you can buy a 48u Cabinet & fill it with some nasty hardware!
POSER PRO. Fun to play the price game with Render Farms.
Now, if only I had the money to build one!

operaguy ( ) posted Sat, 04 October 2008 at 9:59 PM

Will PoserPro support more than four processors rendering at once?

Will it support more than 8GIG RAM usage on a 64-bit OS, both Mac and Win?

Don't know about the RAM but...
POSER PRO will support either 3 or 10 render nodes, depending on which version you buy.
I'm thinking that it will only support 1 CPU per node, so Intel's SkullTrain second CPU would go
unused by POSER, as would a second Xeon.

I was thinking more like 8 intel 2180 CPUs & oc the crap out of them, or now maybe 8
5200 wolfdales. Don't like the .5 (12.5) multiplier though.
As for RAM, 4Gb should be enough for render nodes of this type.

I would say that for the price mentioned $23,500 we could use 8 Q9650s, oc them to 4Ghz
and use 8Gig RAM per node and still have money left over!
After all the 8 CPUs will only Us set back about $4,750 ;)
The sad part is, Vista Retail will cost us $2,400. Seems fair to me :(
