Does anyone know if a Saxophone exists for Poser? I know there was a thread about it, but can't seem to find it..

Here is the thread you were looking for.  I don't know if any of the inside links still work though.

Man..ContentParadise has exactly what I want, but they took it off the market...why even mislead someone like that?!!! This world is so... so... so... cruel! :m_bawling:

I could have sworn that DAZ had a freebie saxophone but I can't find it anymore.

pakled ( ) posted Fri, 03 October 2008 at 8:43 PM

I made a seaxophone (a bladed tenor seax which would cleave the skull of any critic) but not the one you're looking for...;)

Whatever happened to 3d Cafe? that would be a place to likely find it.

yeah, I tried them, but no luck.

Turbosquid have a few really good quality ones, running anywhere from $50 -$200. For 3D studio Max I think, but perhaps they could be converted.

Inspired_Art ( ) posted Sat, 04 October 2008 at 1:56 PM

I saw that...$200 for a 3D Sax! If only I was rich! I may have to go with the $50.00 one, Hopefully they import nicely into Poser

you can pick up a real sax in a pawnshop for that much...;)

I've seen a few requests for a Poser ready one over the last couple of years. It looks like a lot of work, but perhaps a modeler here would be up for producing a reasonably priced one - I know I'd buy it.

nomuse ( ) posted Mon, 06 October 2008 at 2:28 PM

Me, I'd be more inclined to model a Suona. Which is so specialized no-one would want it.  (Or just do krumhorn, shawm, rackett, et al...)

Thanks nyguy! Although not as detailed as the $200 one I really want over at Turbosquid, this one will work!

No problem, I find that site very nice for resources at are hard to find.

So....by spherical fourrier transform, a saxophone is similar to a violin?  There's some oddly appropriate topological magic going on here.

Best explain yourself there. If you are talking about the 3D graphics environment, then my best answer would be....I don't know what you are talking about. A violin is different from a saxophone. To me, a true 3D Saxophone, like the $200 one they have at Turbosquid (can't get that one outta my mind 🤤 ), would have all moving parts mimicking a real sax, allowing it to really move in 3D animation. The only real animating parts I figured a violin would have would be the strings...but again, I am no expert musically, so I can't say.

Check the page linked to above (http://www-c.inria.fr/gamma/download/affichage.php?dir=MUSIC&name=SAXOPHON ).  That is my reaction to what THEY said.  Not my thoughts (I, too, do not believe they are topologically similar).

Inspired_Art ( ) posted Wed, 08 October 2008 at 3:55 PM

Oh,.,,,ok,,,, I guess 😕
Sorry nomuse, I'm no expert  (and kind of ignorant) in what it takes to build a 3D object. Even after a couple of years being involved with Poser, and more frequently DAZ's Hexagon, Carrara, I'm still trying to understand these programs (along with Photoshop)

nomuse ( ) posted Wed, 08 October 2008 at 4:22 PM

I don't understand the rules they are applying to compare topologies.  My feeling is that an efficient mesh for violin and sax would have vastly different flows; a sax would have edge loops around the tube, and a violin would have edge loops along the sides (aka in the orientation of the perfling).

Maybe they are comparing surfaces directly.  But that fails as well; a sax is topologically a donut (a tube with one open end, and the other crimped almost closed).  A violin is a box with two openings into the center void.  Okay...I guess I can see the topological inversion from one to the other.

But like you said, once you add the rest of the parts; valves, reeds, pegs, strings, bridges, et al, any similarity of the base shape becomes trivial.

So my best guess is the linked-to library has only six items, and the violin was more similar to the sax than was the Maserati or the aardvark.

A little further off the subject; I too have Hexagon and Carrara (and I've also tried C4d, Wings3d, and Amapi).  I find Hexagon too unstable for my tastes.  When you finally figure out what a function does is when the whole program locks up on you.  Carrara, in contrast, I find extremely intuitive modeling-wise, with an interface that I find friendly and easy to navigate in (as a comparison, I start yelling at Poser when I have to go back there and experience it's lousy camera controls again).

I'm in process of building a drum kit myself (doesn't EVERYONE build one?  That, and electric guitars....!)  The differences in mine are an excrutiating level of visual detail in some of the fittings, and maximum support for both posing and animation.  Finally got my pedal rigged for Poser so all the cams and belts and springs work correctly.  Now I have to do the same magic to get snares with working tensioner and throw-off.  Even put "hit" morphs on the drum heads.  It's a lot of work to get a fully functional musical instrument.

But there are two big problems to the process.  One is that it is very difficult to coordinate with the Poser figures using it.  It's one thing to rig the valves on a sax (you can even rig them to respond to a MIDI file!)  Quite another to get a Poser figure to finger the valves correctly, while swinging and bobbing.

The other is, as the Animusic people figured out, a lot of instruments aren't that exciting when animated.  Many don't really change shape at all when sounding.  So if you want exciting animation you have to leave realism a little and put in morphs for how the sound "feels."  Max Fleischer horns, et al.

Inspired_Art ( ) posted Wed, 08 October 2008 at 4:37 PM

Yeah, I can understand about the differences.

Hexagon tends to lock up and shut down on me too when I access certain functions. Hopefully they get it resolved by the time the next version arrives, or even provide a fix as it is now.

For a wide angle shots, I don't really think that a sax would need working parts, however I know that at some point in the future, when I better understand Poser's animation function (Or Carrara's, etc), I will want to do a close up animation shot of a sax player ( I can already visualize the shot), and that would require moving keys, etc.

As you said, there are problems.

At least for sax, the hand positions don't vary a lot.  It's mostly fingers up and down.  For a piano, the whole arm moves, and different fingers are used on different notes depending on whether it is easier to cross over or to shift your hand.  Guitar and violin bring in another aspect, as with those there are alternate fingerings to most single notes.  Drums really bring out the ballistic problem; the drummer's arm must start moving long before the crash cymbal arrives in the music.  Animating a player on an instrument is a challenge indeed.

You're telling me! I am trying to animate Renderosity's Zlata in Poser 7 as an email gift for my niece and finding it challenging, frustrating, and kinda fun at the same time. I know Poser 7 also has a speech engine, but I'm so not there yet, lol

Strangely, the animation forum here is dead....

Wonder if I should mention I've got a nice set of stage mics I've been too lazy to finish packaging and put in the store?  If they would be any use to you, consider yourself a beta tester and I'll box up what I've got and put that in my file locker.

All right.  I'm in middle of a big file-cleaning.  Might take me a day or so to box them up properly.

Ok, I'm trying to get some real work done on my end...but getting nowhere as usual :glare:
