Subject: What graphiccard to bye?

yvonne. ( ) posted Tue, 14 October 2008 at 8:24 AM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 12:09 AM

What would you recomend?

I have a AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core 42000+, 4 gig RAM with Vista
Now I have a NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT card, it works but instead of bying a new one to my youngest son I will be getting a better and he my current one :-)

I always thought that NVIDIA worked very well for Poser but recently I have had problems with some drivers and when looking around I saw that many more have problems with NVIDIA cards.

Suggestions? I don´t play any games, just Poser.

/Yvonne

Get the latest drive... almost all problems with Poser are fixed now. My advise about GC is buy the best you can pay for! More memory give you better support for large textures, better velocity give you a faster OpenGL display.

To bad it was the latest drivers that caused the problem, when I got back to the previous it worked.

I inted to bye the best I can afford but I really don´t know what is good for Poser.

personally I'd be looking for a new card to replace that G85 just because it's a Nividia.see the link for details and further links on this.

Ok lets talk about GC... there are 2 kind: gamers and pro cards. The X generation from Nvidia is for game use, yes you can still use in production... BUT if you have the money go for a Professional video card (they dont play games!) for Nvidia there are the Quadro series that is for professional use only... very expensive (almost for me...) but very responsive.
Other thing is that Poser have a very old OpenGL engine that need to be updated... dont know when SM will do that or if they will do in the future...

erm. the main point of my post is not Nividia vs ATI.

it's the very real possibility that the entire G8* series of GPU's are faulty. Right now Apple and HP are reporting large numbers of faults and are offering repairs on affected units. Right now, it's mainly Laptop based chips, but there are predictions that we've just not reached the failure curve for the desktop units as yet... (Laptops under go more heat / cooling / heat / cooling cycles than desktops...)

Well I have a 8500GT here and no problem with Carrara, Daz Studio, ZBrush and other 3D apps... I will buy Poser 7 next month so I will tell if it have any problem... I just have Poser 5 here that is pretty old.

....read the link.
we're talking about chip failure not problems with an application.

I just got a ati radeon 4870 card that seems to work great for me.  I know its really for gaming but the ones for professional 3D are all $1500.00 to $4000.00  way too expensive for me.

Life is hard, but what a ride.

Well,
my computer started with a bang with smoke coming out of it this morning :-(( off to service and when they already had it open I asked if they could put in a NVIDIA GeForce 9600Gt they hade but it didn´t fit in my computer!!! so I got a ATI Radeon 4850 that is supposed to be better, I hope so :-) but I wouldn´t have been glad if I purchased a NVIDIA card to get home and couldn get it into my computer....so everything happens for a reason :-))

I rebuild computers in my spare time and found that the older ATI cards sucked, meaning they sucked your power, your system ram, your soul (no wait that was my ex wife). Any how, I have been using Nvidia GC's for about 12 years and I never had an issue with them in any application except Tiger Woods 1999. But that was an issue with the game not the card. For awhile Microsucks would try to update Nvidia drivers with their drivers. I am running on my system a Geforce FX5200 with 256MB and it works great with Poser 7.

I upgraded an nVidia 8400GTS to an ATI 4850, and the 4850 rocks, problems at all in Poser (or any other app, for that matter). I was a bit nerveous with wth some of the bad press ATI had on older cards, but this card is great.

still hooked to real life and enjoying the siesta!

ATI cards used to suck like a black hole several years ago, but their newer cards are very good; however, for Poser, you need better OpenGL support, which is Nvidia's specialty.

Use nVidia drivers version 163.75 with Poser and you won't have so many strange problems and crashes. They nearly drove me nuts till I found that here on the 'Rosity forums.

I think that 163 series dont have the OpenGL 2.0 support... but it always a good idea to use an old drive... but this way you can get slow in others softwares too.
