Subject: Question about Material/Texture Filtering

I created a model in 3DS Max and imported it into Poser.  Everything seemed okay except the texture maps seemed "out of focus" when rendered.  I went into the Material room and in the Color Texture box I changed each texture's Filtering option from "Quality" to "None"  (the other option is "fast") and now the texture maps are crisp and clear.

I'm glad it works, but I'm just wondering why it would do that.  I would assume that "Quality" would mean a better image?

It's a trade-off.  The filtering (introduced in P7) was meant to help avoid jaggy
edges, and to avoid moire patterns and other 'aliasing' artifacts on
detailed textures. 

The problem is, sometimes you want fine details and aliasing isn't a problem.  
I'm in this camp, so I always turn off the filtering.

Another option is to set Min Shading Rate very close to zero (as in 0.1) in the
render settings.  This also sharpens up the picture.

Thanks ockham. (and btw, we're neighbors, I live in Ellensburg)

So my follow up question would be if I placed this model for sale in the Marketplace, I would  probably be using one of my earlier versions of Poser to set it up (Maybe Poser 5 or 6) because I realize not everyone has Poser 7.

So if it's created in Poser 5, how would it affect how it's used in Poser 7?  Would I need to do a separate setup for Poser 7 users or would the filtering automatically be set to none?

If you have P7, you can set the nodes on the image map to Filtering=None
and save the model that way.   Since filtering doesn't exist
in 5 and 6, those nodes won't have any effect there.

(That is, 5 and 6 will read the code but ignore it.)

It might be of interest that SVDL has a free script that adjusts the Texture Filtering setting for all image maps for a selected Figure or Prop. No more tedious clicking through all the image maps in the Mat Room to do this... two or three clicks and it's done.

Just as a side note for your future product(s), you can create them in Poser 7 and just edit the version number to 5 for any cr2, pp2, pz2, etc...that you create.

That's good to know, thanks.  Now I won't have to search a dozen storage boxes for an older version of Poser!
