how is carrera for texturing...does anyone have experience? The new version looks nice and it has a similar look to bryce which I like...but how is the learning curve?

You might want to ask the question over on the Carrara forum. The moderator, Litst, is a whiz at Carrara textures whiz, as are several other of the inhabitants.
