Subject: Copy/paste shaders in Vue7 impossible?

vincebagna ( ) posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 2:09 AM · edited Thu, 12 December 2024 at 11:34 AM

Has anyone experienced it?

Copy/pste shaders by right clicking on the shader thumb on the top right corner doesn't work anymore...

Yes, I think this is broken.  You should report this a bug.  Alternatively, you could hit F6 and bring up the material scene preview strip which does support cut and paste.

Trepz ( ) posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 3:05 AM

Seems theres alot of bugs in 7 already...geez, there goes another year of patches and half-ass updates...

Will do. And thanks for the material preview strip tip :)

Yeah saw that one, lol.

Oh for pity's sake!! this is hardly a frikkin' "doomsday" bug, get real all you complainers and  moaners, lol

That's the only bug I've had and it crashed once for me...um, that's pretty bloody good for a
new app, you know ;)

As said before, Vue5 Infinite release was abysmally bad for bugs until about 6 months in, 3 months fixed nealry all the Vue6 bugs. So it' sa lot better.
Go use other apps and see how much crap they have. Their forums are full of complaints at every release ;)

I've reported that bug to a tech.
And it appears that copy/pasting works for individual items, but not for grouped ones.
I mean if you have 2 spheres with different materials for each, you can copy and paste one material to the other. But if they are grouped and you select the group, you can't copy the #1 material and paste it onto the #2 material.
Though if you select the individual sphere inside the group, you can copy the material to the other individual sphere...

I must add it's rather annoying with Poser people imported into Vue. I use to copy/paste the hip material onto the torso one, etc.... in order to have only one material for all the torso parts, one for all the limbs parts, and one for the face parts (when i don't use SkinVue of course) :)

I've been using Vue7 since the day it came out and only detected one bug, in a very special context. I had a standard terrain, populated it with rocks, converted the terrain to procedural while it was populated, Vue asked me if I wanted to repopulate and crashed. I reported it to e-on and one day later got a reply saying that they were able to replicate the problem and it would be fixed in the next patch. Anyway, it's an absolute minor thing, this kind of action sequence is very unusual. I am really happy with Vue7, it's very stable and fast.

Anyway, I've been over at C3D forums, and I'm always in this forum, and haven't heard about any major problem. Trepz, where did you hear about "a lot of bugs"? The most serious one I heard was this person who had recurrent problems with a Mac, in C3D. I'm a PC guy, my kind of apple is only the type that grows on trees. :-) Anyway, other Mac owners posted saying that they had no problems, so it was only this guy.

vincebagna ( ) posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 7:28 AM

For my part, except that little one, i'm really happy with Vue7 too. I only had 2 or 3 crashes until now, but i guess it's because i clicked too fast everywhere lol

Vince, does the function "store" in the material editor work, for grouped objects? I use this all the time, much more than copy+paste (I only wish there'd be more than two slots for the "store" function). I'm not home, can't test it right now, but I'm curious about it. If it works, than it's a perfectly good workaround.

Rutra ( ) posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 7:40 AM

Oh, and by the way, does drag+drop work for copying materials for grouped objects? If this works, it's another workaround for the lack of copy+paste.

vincebagna ( ) posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 7:51 AM

Man, i didn't even know the store function! How useful!
Though it seams to work only with mixed materials... i'm not sure though as i've never used this function before.
About the drag+drop, the answer is no. When you drag a material onto one of the grouped spheres, the all group is selected and takes the material.

Rutra ( ) posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 7:52 AM

And yet another way (I love this about Vue, there are so many ways of doing things). If you select a group of objects and in one material you right click and choose "assign to all", does it work? This is still another workaround for the lack of copy+paste. :-)

Rutra ( ) posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 7:54 AM

The store function works with everything, not only mixed. The button might not be immediately available (might be grey). If you click on the very little sphere of the material in the tree view, the store button should become available.

vincebagna ( ) posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 7:57 AM

"assign to all" works right. Though it's a workaround only if you want all your group to have the same material ;)

About the store function, you're right, clicking the little sphere makes it available :)

Rutra ( ) posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 8:02 AM

Regarding "assign to all", don't forget that you can select individual items inside a group, not necessarily the whole group. For example, in a poser character, you could select the hip, torso, etc, not the entire character, and then do "assign to all". This will assign the same material to the various body elements you want and leave the others out, like eyes, etc. This workflow is even faster than copy+paste, I would say.

vincebagna ( ) posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 8:07 AM

Oh, but when i import a Poser figure, i can't select the hip, torso etc. I only have one Body object. Could it be because for the import, i have 'group figures as single mesh' checked?

My Store

Rutra ( ) posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 8:10 AM

Yes, that's why. If you uncheck that option you have the various part elements as individual objects inside a group.

Rutra ( ) posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 8:12 AM

But anyway, if the store function works, you don't need "assign to all" nor copy+paste. All you have to do is store one material and then, as you select other materials, just double click on the stored material or drag+drop it to the material preview and it will replace the selected material.

vincebagna ( ) posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 8:40 AM

I don't know how i have missed that store function. It would have been pretty much useful if i knew it sooner :)

I wasn't moaning or complaining, just saying I am glad I have waited as more bugs seem to being reported now.

And FYI, I do use other apps like Cinema4D and have never had really any problems with that, most of the apps I use haven't caused me problems, the main one I use now which is a constant headache is Vue 6 Inf. I have recently changed my graphics card to Nvidia and so far the graphics problems I had are better.

Jonj1611, what "more bugs" are these? I also asked Trepz in my post above what he meant by  "a lot of bugs", as I have heard of very little problems. I'm usually around two forums, here and C3D, and have heard of very few bugs and, furthermore, fairly harmless or irrelevant and/or for which there are workarounds. I would hardly consider what I've read so far as reason not to upgrade. In fact, I even read in the forums more bugs about Vue 6 than about Vue 7!
So, what am I missing?

Trepz ( ) posted Wed, 12 November 2008 at 6:57 AM

Bugs are irrelevant for me as far as upgrades go. Vue with all it idiocincrasies is still THE BEST at what it does. Theres several complaints here and other places, it is normal. I just thought since e-on has gone "global" over the past couple years the bugs would be minimal...or far less upon release. I am a vendor over at C3D, so Vue is my one true love:D BUGS AND ALL(; Bugs do not worry me, just bothers me that a company cannot seem to get there eggs all in one basket.

If you do import as a Single Mesh and then want to break the group up, just 'Right Click on the object in the work space or the layers tree, select 'Edit Object', then select 'Split' and when you are done with your material handling you can always 'Weld' it back together. Assuming you didn't know this already of course!!!  ;^D

You're right, i didn't know that LOL
Thank for the tip :)

BTW, the copy/paste bug has been moved to the development staff.
