I personally would prefer Genetica because you don't need a base image to create the textures from, I think you need to start with an existing image with Image Synth? Only Genetica is a bit more pricey...
Similar to Genetica, there's also Filter Forge which is pretty cool too, that's the one I have and I really like it. Back when I bought it I didn't know about Genetica though, if I had known, it's possible I would have picked that one, it has some features that I really like, the possibility to make your own hdri environment maps is kinda neat...

Image Synth use some codes from Allegorithmic that have the FREE MapZone to create textures...

I saw a review for Genetica and look almost the same as MapZone (without the animations feature and HDRI)... and yes its free.

I was a big fan of Genetica until their latest upgrade policies. I had purchased v2 and participated in the v3 beta. When I went to upgrade to v3, I found it cost more to upgrade than for a new user to purchase the full product ($50 more.)
Of course I could buy the whole product again, but I guess it is the principle that product loyalty should mean something.
It's a good application -- just a personal thing for me as to why I will no longer support it.
