Spiral Graphics Genetica or Luxology's Image Synth?

I personally would prefer Genetica because you don't need a base image to create the textures from, I think you need to start with an existing image with Image Synth?  Only Genetica is a bit more pricey... 

Similar to Genetica, there's also Filter Forge which is pretty cool too, that's the one I have and I really like it.  Back when I bought it I didn't know about Genetica though, if I had known, it's possible I would have picked that one, it has some features that I really like, the possibility to make your own hdri environment maps is kinda neat...

Image Synth use some codes from Allegorithmic that have the FREE MapZone to create textures...

I have heard of MapZone but never knew anyone who used it.  You like it compared to other programs?

Its a software to create textures from scratch, unsing procedural or images too. Its free.

I'll have to try it out.  Image Synth used to be a PS plug-in but now it is a stand alone as well as a plug in.

Spiral Graphics put out a program that does wood textures and its FREE!  That Genetica Studio is rediculously expensive.

Genetica Studio is indeed very expensive, but Genetica Basic contains all the non-animated texture generating nodes and is reasonably priced.

Basic also doesn't include hair and fiber as well HDRI.  The Pro version has everything except the animations which I really don't need.  Heck, for the price difference you can pick up programs that will do the animations and more.

I rather liked Mapzone myself, and it is a free download as I recall. It's tree/node based, but that's good once you grasp it.

I saw a review for Genetica and look almost the same as MapZone (without the animations feature and HDRI)... and yes its free.

I was a big fan of Genetica until their latest upgrade policies.  I had purchased v2 and participated in the v3 beta.  When I went to upgrade to v3, I found it cost more to upgrade than for a new user to purchase the full product ($50 more.)

Of course I could buy the whole product again, but I guess it is the principle that product loyalty  should mean something.

It's a good application -- just a personal thing for me as to why I will no longer support it.

I thought it a bit pricey for an upgrade myself.  I've decided to hold off on all upgrades and any new software till this economy looks better.  In the meantime I'll be happy and busy trying to master what I already have.
