Subject: Poser 7 on an Intel Core i7 rig

I just finished assembling my new rig with the Core i7 920 processor and 6 gigs of DDR3 ram.  The 920 at 2.67 mhz is the bottom of line of the 3 new processors (the others being beyond my budget).

I have not had much time to work with Poser yet, but so far it is sweet.  With 6 figures, hair, some clothes, props - it is smooth as silk.  My 2 year old AMD just could not handle a scene with that much stuff.  I seem to have less trouble with 'lost textures.'  May just be a coincidence.

Rendering time on 4 threads is good.  I did not set a stop watch, but I am sure it was under a minute or two.  I think the processor has the ability to work in 8 cores, but Poser is limited to 4.  Don't know if it matters, as 4 threads seems to be enough.

Supposedly the RAM needs to be installed in 3s.  There are three channels (whatever that means.)  As soon as I have an extra $200+ I will add 6 more gig for a total of 12. 

If I learn anything new with more Poser time, I will update.

And you use Poser ???

With this configuration i think you may use Max or Maya !!!

Just be aware that Poser 7 will not use more than 4 GB of RAM, period. Doesn't matter whether you have a 64 bit OS or not. The Poser Pro renderer, however, is full 64bit, and will use more than 4 GB if it's available.
I've run renders on a Q6600 with 8 GB of DDR2 where Poser Pro used close to 7 GB of RAM during the final render. Poser 7 couldn't render the scene.
OS: Windows XP Pro 64 bit.
That was over 15 figures, no clothes, half of the figures with strand-based hair, the rest with transmapped hair, plus a fairly complex environment, using raytraced reflections, soft raytraced point lights and spot lights, and a lot of displacement. Half of the figures were V3 resolution or more, textures were 2048x2048 or more. All figures had different textures.

Even in Poser Pro, the base app is still 32 bits. When scenes get too complicated, it'll hiccup.

Sounds like a REALLY sweet machine for Vue 6 Infinite 64 bit!

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

Im planning on building an i7 rig later in the new year, as my 7year old machine is slowly edging its way into a grave, although it still runs P7 ok, lol

Getting old and still making "art" without soiling myself, now that's success.

Thanks for the info, svdl.  I will hold off adding RAM till there is a reason.

I guess I should look into Vue.

I just bought an i7 rig myself.  I'm still waiting for it to arrive, mind you.  920 processor, 6GB of Ram... I can't wait!!!   Damn company had said it would be ready last week, but I guess holidays delay everything.

I have Poser 7 and Poser Pro.  I guess I'll install Pro on the new rig, thanks for the info svdl!

With that and my old single processor AMD 2600 and an AMD Dual Core laptop, I figure I will have a pretty nice little poor man's renderfarm for Carrara (does Poser pro do netowrk rendering?  I can't remember.)

Ah... the possibilities... yet on Monday i go back to work and will have no time.

64 bit and tons of RAM = sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!

seen some crazy good render times with different apps, with the i7 cores and right set up.
