Hi:
Is there a way to change the state of parenting of a prop or figure
mid animation. For example to pass one object from hand to hand.
I know its possible with trickery like using 2 instances of the prop and
changing its visibility through the material or scaling, but its problematic
and unsatisfactory. Any feedback appreciated.

No, there isn't any direct way to do it.  The tricks you mention are the only ways.

This has been suggested strongly as an improvement for Poser 8.... we'll see.

Parenting can't be switched.  If your problem is getting the second instance to line up with the first, make it from the first.

Save the materials of the first, and at the point where you would switch between the two export the prop to OBJ.  Reimport that prop, unchecking all import options.  It will land right where the other was, and that will be the second instance.  Apply the materials to it.

If I misunderstood, just ignore me ;)
