Subject: ot: PETA wants to rename fish "sea kitties"

guess they forgot that kittens eat fish.
that would make them cannibals i guess

Not clear what PETA hopes to gain from this trick.  The worst offenders
for overfishing and overwhaling are the Japanese, and they aren't going
to be stopped by this.

Also, cats don't like being in water, so the mental image fails from the start.  Imagine
a cat in water, and the next thing you imagine is ferocious claws and screeching,
not exactly a cute picture.

The idea is to make fish appear as cute and cuddly as kittens, so that people feel sorry for them and feel uncomfortable when thinking about slaughtering or eating them.

To a certain degree, I do agree with that - just because fish don't scream doesn't mean they're not in pain. If we anyone killed cows, pigs and hens the same way fish are being killed, say by drowning or suffocating them, it would be a big scandal.

So then we would have cat sea kitties? the way fish are killed may not be humaine but renaming them are not going to make them concidered cute and cuddly any more than polecats are. (a polecat is another term for a skunk)

Oh now thats a truly novel idea, as if simply renaming something, to justify one's own illogical, irrational, unreasonable position, has never been tried before.

it'd make fishing a tad easier. No worms, just one good cat toy and all the fish you can eat!  LOL

I am Native Ameican and I find all the warm and fuzzeh about prey-animals somehow sickening. I eat animals. Period.  I may respect them and thank their spirit for the bounty they give me after I kill them, but I kill them to eat them!  There is a balance in the world, and man has gone to far on one side, but going to far onto the other will not correct the situation!

The most famous vegetarian the world ever heard of was Adolph Hitler. Why do PETA members sound so much like him sometimes?  I'll never eat meat or harm an animal, buts I'd kill millions of fellow humans? WTF? I have heard PETA members say they'd kill off all the world's humans, if they could.

I think I'd rather eat fish and meat and be more like Hank Hill, than go without and be more like Hitler.

the "sea-kitties" thing may be in relation to the way most advanced countries have
destroyed their native stocks of fish, and are now trying to destroy the fisheries
of other areas as well.  everywhere one looks around europe and the states (excepting alaska),
fish stocks have been reduced to the point where they can no longer sustain the kind
of destructive practices now in use.  e.g. some EU fishermen are demanding fuel allowances,
because, having wiped out coastal fish stocks, they must travel so far now that they need
an half-tonne of fuel to catch a ton of fish, much of which is thrown back (dead) as "trash fish".

Hitler had a vegetarian diet, mostly due to gastric problems, not "moral" reasons.  Just FYI.  (as for the PETA stuff...I have spent way too much of my life on a farm raising animals to know that most of their propaganda is just that.  Propaganda.  I will try pretty much any meat or egg put before me.)

Actually, speaking of eggs, I have an anecdote.  I was out for dinner on my birthday with a friend of mine at Denny's.  I ordered something with eggs on it, and my waitress whispers "oooh...chicken period."  First of all, eww.  Second, seriously, PETA is the only organization that views it that way.  And, seriously, if you're that big of an animist, why the heck are ya working at Denny's?

It depends on whom you talk to. Vegetarians say he wasn't, non vegetarians say he was but again you deal with two agendas trying to dispel the other.

From what I have read and studied about Hitler his doctors put him on a vegetarian diet to cure him of flatulence and a chronic stomach disorder, his biographers such as Albert Speer, Robert Payne, John Toland, and others, have attested to his liking for ham sausages and other cured meats. But there are conflicting opinions of this as well as his love for animals.

I dunno. I don't care what anyone eats. If they eat meat, that's fine. If they don't, that's fine too.
However, I'd like to have the same freedom -- and I like my eggs and bacon too much to ever go vegetarian.
However, I also rather have another helping of broccoli, than of pork roast.
When we went to a friend's for dinner, she went "Oh gosh I made FAR too many vegetables" and my other half went "Park Silke in the kitchen near the greens and there won't be leftovers."
He's right. :) If there's nice veggies going, I'll pass on the meat.
Unless it's bacon!
Or crackling.

Just asking, bud.

And bashing Faux is sometimes too easy. Just because they hit the mark once with an easy target doesnt make them gods.

Further to the point, consider that, despite all the wrong-headedness, PETA actually has one thing right: in "sport fishing", it's not about sustenance. You catch something and throw it back. Of course, you've mangled its mouth and probably made it more difficult for the fish to eat, but hey, it's "sport", right?

I'm not condoning PETA. But I am saying that maybe it's time we think a little more about the impact of what we do on the earth. We're running real scared right now because we're finally figuring out what we do to the enviornment. Well, hate to break it to ya, but that doesnt stop with bottles and cans and trash.

Bottom line: if you're fishing for food, great. I'm with ya on that one. But if your idea of a great time is hooking something and then throwing it back, maybe you should try it on yourself first and see what it's like. Get someone to run a hook through your mouth and then drag you along for a hundred feet or so. I'm sure you'll get a big thrill out of it too. Then start with the judgment calls, okay?

Of course you are condoning PETA.  You're supporting them and ridiculing fox news for, wait for it, reporting the news.

Sport fishing - I can take it or leave it.  By your analysis, anyone who rides a horse should put on a saddle and let someone else ride them.  PETA would be proud.

Where is the judgment call? - I provided the link.  If you can spend more than 10 minutes on that site without puking, then you are a PETA-phile.

If everything in your world is so very, very black and white, maybe you'd have a point.

But sadly for you, the real world comes in not only shades of grey but a multitude of colours. I suggest you deal with it and move on.

And yes, when someone says "Fox News reported...", you're damn right I'm gonna question it. Again, I suggest you deal and move on.

My point, since it apparently is not clear, is that PETA has constructed an entire website devoted to the indoctrination of children into their extremist world view.

At first I thought, as many no doubt did, that the subject of this thread was a joke.  In fact, I joined in by posting what I felt was a humorous depiction of sea kittens as cat food.  This is called ironic juxtaposition.

The post referring to "faux news" peaked my interest sufficiently to google the topic.  I found that it is no joke.  The site is clearly targeted to children with cute characters and topics, including HTML story books with a heavy dose of anthropomorphism.  If this site had been constructed by a corporate group to sell a product, the media would have been all over it.  Since it just "educates" children on the horrors of the holocaust of animal abuse, it is all right.

It is rather odd, yet all too commonplace,  that people feel perfectly free to throw bombs at institutions like fox news, who at least attempt to tell both sides of most stories, and then become infuriated when it is pointed out that their accusations bear no merit.
