Subject: Circuit City is closing by tomorrow!

Would this be the right time to buy cheap laptops and desktops?

But I have to admit I feel bad about this. Its not a good sight here in America seeing big businesses closing.

ah wait...

this might be also black propaganda by other retailers. A visit to the nearest CC store just to confirm will be necessary. Anyway, they say the liquidation will go till March. I encourage any of you guys scout today and report your findings for the benefit of the community because I will by tomorrow in my off.

Also, according to CNN news reports, CC has retained a clearance agency to buy up and clearance their leftover stock, so odds are, there won't be the huge deals people are expecting.

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

That's old news. Ours ( Circuit City) closed like a month ago.Compusa closed long time ago and so i can only go to Radioshack, .. Good for some stuff but not much computer wise

Rosemaryr ( ) posted Sat, 17 January 2009 at 10:45 AM

Our local CC had their final clearance sales during last December....only went down to about 30% off. The stuff that was marked down deeply was not really anything in demand.

Went by mine this morning. I just wanted to get a movie like I usually do on Saturday. Lots of people looking around, but really no one buying anything. I saw no announcements regarding sales of any kind. I overheard one store clerk saying they didn't know anything about sales or discounts yet but hoped to hear sometime today. Nothing on their web site except an announcement that they were going out of business and their current policy regarding purchases. About 20% of their DVD's were already gone. Other than that it seemed pretty well stocked as normal, but I didn't stay long.

Thanks

CompUSA rarely offered any real bargains. They almost always had the MSRP and Best Buy and Circuit City were often lower - online, Newegg was lower more often than not.  It'll be sad to see Circuit City go because they were often lower priced than Best Buy and carried some stuff Best Buy didn't.

When a store goes into liquidation, the liquidation companies come in and they charge the high prices until the bitter end. Not the stores themselves. Often times the liquidators bring in their own high priced inventory. Now when CompUSA closed stores last year, I got some real good deals on some things. But lots of stuff was never marked down and was often shipped off (the Mac stuff and anything higher end like blu ray burners).

The U.S. car companies don't deserve the credit mess. They produced smaller cars that were great quality the past few years but not many would buy them because everybody wanted an SUV. I just bought a Chevy Cobalt XFE last June and it has been one of the best cars I've ever owned and very fuel efficient. The higher end cars like the Lincolns and Cadillacs and Corvettes have always been better cars.

I've owned American, Japanese and German. One Honda Civic was great but couldn't get it repaired cheap. The VW Scirocco was a great car but couldn't get it repaired cheap either. Most of my American cars have been very good to great (two of the great ones were stolen from me). The only good thing about the trouble right now is that they'll finally get to close down all the really bad car dealerships which is where most of the recent blame should go. And by the way, almost everyone is hurting now and going through what we've been going through in Michigan for the past several years. It's getting worse now here because many companies that were able to survive all that time are really getting crushed and are letting workers go left and right. And look for more broadcasting employees to be let go. All the major companies have been whittling their staffs down but next week Clear Channel is expected to let thousands go on Inauguration Day. There's a reason they are called the evil empire.

The banks and all the idiots in the housing market buying what they couldn't afford are the main culprits for this economic crisis with the oil companies and OPEC and Congress bringing up the rear.

soooo if say we wanted something at circit city after it classes in the us can we still get it from canada?

ksanderson ( ) posted Sat, 17 January 2009 at 3:23 PM · edited Sat, 17 January 2009 at 3:26 PM

According to the news sites, there are still bids on the several hundred Canadian stores. So it looks like they are open yet and being run by Circuit City.

The store closest to me was offering 10-20% discounts on a lot of things.  Sadly, it had nothing I wanted to buy.

WARK!

the've already cleared all the good stuff.  whatever is left is probly not worth buying,
altho I dunno why folks would rather rush out and buy a 3rd-rate laptop right now, if
they're on the verge of losing their jobs.  very bad idea falling for this kind of scam IMVHO.

About the only thing I bought from CompUSA was some lame computer tool kit with screwdriver, bits, tweezers, pliers, and a bunch of other knick-knacks.  The case had "CompUSA" in recessed lettering on it, too.

I got it about a day before the place finally went belly-up.  It was also about the only thing you COULD get a deal on (got it for five bucks)- all the GOOD merch had been shipped to some liquidation house or were sold to other retailers.

This is different than the earlier Clearance at Circuit City Stores in the US. The company has gone out of business as of yesterday. This is the first day of the Clearance Sale. All Stores are closing. The Clearance is being run by the Creditors, not Circuit City itself per se....

All Merchandise that can be returned, will most likely be returned for sale to other Retailers, but that is not much. As with any clearance, it will start out slow (10% to 30% Off), but since everything (including fixtures) must go, they will go down to about 75% to 90% Off over the next 10 weeks.  Realize that some stores will close before they reach that price, since they will move inventory, when feasible, to stores that are having better traffic.

As far as Greed goes, according to what they are saying here (Richmond VA, the Headquarters for Circuit City)... Circuit City owed the Creditors nearly 2.4 Billion. This sale is to pay those Creditors. Though the company had assets greater than that, they could not get the Financing to meet their current and upcoming obligations. (Basically the Bank called their Note Due)

As far as deals go, there will be some, but not so great at first and maybe not so great at all. Locally, I heard the Best Buy's were matching 10% to 30% off this weekend, so many people were going to Best Buy instead. Sales like this can hurt other Retailers, since people buy now, what they may have purchased in the near future from other Retailers. Keep that in mind if you are shopping for something if the deal is not all that good.

Online Now!

CC is letting 34 thousand folks go nation wide. That will up the unemployment and put another squeeze on the economy. I still get email ads from CompUSA, so they must be in business somewhere.
