Subject: Valentine's Day Poetry Challenge

jstro ( ) posted Sat, 24 January 2009 at 11:46 AM · edited Wed, 11 December 2024 at 10:30 PM

mamabobbijo suggested someone start a round robin to try and get things rolling around here again. So here's a round robin Valentine's Day challenge for everyone. And since we're talking Valentine's Day, what better than poetry?

Write a Valentine poem, two stanzas long, each stanza four lines each. Can, but does not need to rhyme. Begin your poem with the last line of the previous poem. (Try to be kind to the next participant by giving them something decent to work with.)

I'll start it out.

Right from the start
I knew it was you.
Our eyes met,
In that shy kind of way.

From the very first day
We became one.
I've never regretted,
You stole my heart.

Your turn. Just begin your poem with "You stole my heart". Let's breath some life back into this forum!

If you'd like (since I actually had something in the pipeline), I can make this into an official forum challenge.  Otherwise, we can just keep it in the forum :)

I second making it official and I don't care for valentine's or love.

the reason is this: The art we create no matter what medium is a static marker of the path that we have walked, for good or ill, so that we never forget from whence we come...

There is also the purgative nature, that we vent out what is inside and move forward and grow, hopefully better than before...

I think it would be fine for you to go ahead with whatever you were planning. It just gives folks more options, as far as I can see. Unless what you had planned is so close in nature as to be redundant, that is. If that's the case, I have no problem with you locking this thread and launching the new one. My feelings won't be hurt. :)

I wouldn't know how to lock a thread if someone had a gun pointed @ my head.

Beauty and the Beast

You stole my heart
Reason and logic were removed
The bit in my mouth, the saddle on my back
all made sense @ the time

I carried us both as far as I could
Until cannabilizing myself in a  one way relationship
Broke the best parts you liked in me, and you found another so quickly
I wish I had known

 I wish I had Known

I wish I had known when I was quite young,
How wonderful granparenting was.
I'd have figured a way to have several more
To give me the love that she does.

She's the light of my life. The beat of my heart.
She makes me smile at the start of each day.
When she gets cranky, I just send her home
And the next day begins a new start!

A ridiculous little thing I know but I had to enter something

It's sweet. I'm not there yet. My kids are just on the cusp of adulthood. But I do look forward to the day, if it ever comes. Here is mine, to keep things moving. Not so sweet, I'm afraid.

Gone
J. M. Strother
And the next day begins a new start,
Though yesterday has yet to pass,
At least in my heart,
Where you will live, forever

A new start, my friends all say.
But they know not the loneliness,
Emptiness of days.
Yesterdays, yet no tomorrows.

Hey Jen,
I have no idea how, but if you put this out front and invited everyone since the challenge is really fairly simple in nature, we might get other types of artists to try their hands at words. there are many who add a few lines to their print work and several are quite good. Just a thought.

Yesterdays, yet no tomorrows
Funny how things turn out
I never would have guessed
It would end like this

I was the woman of your dreams
You were the man I didn't know existed
As it turned out, that wasn't enough
I move forward, alone

I move forward, alone, for now
And do not weep at your departure.
Oh, that's such a lie,
But you shall not see my tears.

Strength, now, is needed above all
To hold together what we have
Though you are away.
Heartbreak lasts, not forever.

Oh, you do such wonderful poetry, auntietk. That is so vivid.

Heartbreak lasts, but not forever
I mourned every day, every day,
My friends grew worried
I thought the pain would never end

One day out of the blue
I heard your voice telling lies
In an instant everything changed

My heart is whole ... I'm moving on.

..........

Thanks, Jon!  I don't get a lot of opportunity to write stuff like this.  I mean, lord knows I've got as much of it lying about as the next poet, but most of the time nobody wants to see it!  LOL!  Maybe I'll start working up a few unfinished heartbreak poems from the archives.  :)

I enjoyed your great addition to the thread!  You created the space to take this to a more positive place.  Love isn't always doom and gloom, right?

To the writers forum, unless you have and I missed it.

Well ... there's not really a lot going on back here.

However, that has nothing to do with your gracious welcome, and I thank you!  :)
