Subject: Vertical or Horizontal?

Went out today with the new camera, trying to learn.  I have an image that I like but I'm having trouble deciding.  After I was done with color correction and everything, I cropped it to see what it would look like as a vertical format.  Now I don't know which one to go with.  Opinions?  Help!  :m_confused2:

Mike

Here's the horizontal.

And here's the vertical.

P.S. Sorry for the quality.  I had to compress the heck out of them for the forum.

horizontal.. the fence leads the eye off into the distance and the shadows are more visible, agree it's a shame the top of the tree is cut off

Hi Mike,

Are one of your examples the ORIGINAL image (as shot) or were these both cropped in someway?

If there is an uncropped version that you can post, I think it would help us provide additional feedback.

Thx
Joe

Like the Horz. version myself. Gives more perspective imo

Thanks everyone.  I appreciate the feedback.

@Joe: I'm ashamed to admit that the horizontal one is un-cropped.  I cut off the tree's head.

Mike...no reason to feel ashamed at all!  Learning is what its all about!

I have to agree with that the horizontal image is a more interesting shot....the fence there does draw my eyes in. That building in the background is a bit of a distraction though.

If its possible to return to this spot, it would be a great learning experience to go back there and explore it again.   You might  want to try different times of the day and see how lighting affects the look there and what can be captured.

I also go with the horizontal view.  Without knowing what is out of view in this photo frame I can't say what I would do with the right if anything.   I like the idea of trying this one again.   I found out asking questions like yours on this forum is  quite productive.

Getting another person's point of view can be refreshing.

Joe, returning to that spot will be very easy.  I can walk across the street and be there in less than a minute.

Tom, out of frame is a golf course on the left, so no issues there.  It's wide open.  On the right, on the other hand, is a line of apartment buildings.  I'll have to come up with creative ways to frame it.

Thanks again for the suggestions.  I will certainly be out there to shoot that tree again.
