I just downloaded this model

and it was at this link, and its server still thankfully diverts the download via an advert page instead of banning the account. Note the spelling of the server name.

My freestuff prop is also at Homestead. Another solution (letting us use more of the free webspace out there) would be for Renderosity to allow HTML links in freestuff, not just ZIP and SIT.

All I ever seem to get from Homestead is a message. "The file you have attempted to download is not available at this time." This includes the file linked above. I don't know what the answer is, but free web space only seems to be available if it's not used.

Homestead I believe limits the number of downloads.... Not sure on that, but I seem to recall someone here having that problem.

oh, forgot to add, that homestead is going commercial, those with free sites will be limited in the number of pages and probably direct linking before the end of the end of the year, they were going to kick that in this month, but decided to allow users more time to move or decide to pay them to stay there.....

If Renderosity hosted the thumbnails, and the free site diverted download requests via an advertisement page, then that would likely satisfy both the free site and the users.

possibly, but the downloads alone are very draining to free sites. Advertising revenue has dropped all over the net and usually doesn't pay for the server fees by itself, not anymore. Files linked to 'rosity have huge transfers because of the number of members. Add more than a handful of downloads direct linked here from any one site and it really does drain the allotted bandwidth for free sites. Have hundreds of sites offering downloads (especially to a large community like this one) and that's bound to drain most servers... No big deal ~if~ advertising revenues covered it......

I suspect that for each hosting site, a big part of the bandwidth load is not downloading the models whenever someone wants one, but downloading the thumbnails whenever someone looks at that part of the Free Stuff.

no, it doesn't seem to be actually, it has to do with file size. A larger image or file or html page takes more bandwidth than a smaller one. An example, I had Dangerous Curves on my site for ironbear and the file is huge. I went way over my transfer limit in the downloads of the file and had to move it (it's getting a new home again). Your files on my site (your freebie site at silvermage.net) don't do nearly the damage that the one big file did. If it was thumbnails than your site would drain SilverMage.Net more than the one Dangerous Curves file did.

Homestead is worthless. Many of the members have no idea how much of a problem it is putting up a popular Freestuff item, as if it is too "popular" places like Homestead will just delete your files, and most pay-for site will want to charge you for the extra bandwidth. There is no free ride!
