Subject: Creating figures from scratch?

szabolcs85 ( ) posted Sun, 15 February 2009 at 7:19 PM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 1:52 PM

I have plans for a monster-figure for Poser 7 I wish to make, question is, how do I make it? What software should I use? How do I create it, model it, texture it, and most of all, how do I rig it with EasyPose? And then, how do I make it into Poser content? Any advice? Any tutorials out there that might help? It is especially the EasyPose-part that intrigues me.

Any help (advice, tutorials) is appreciated.

Sincerely:
Szabolcs85

Ambitious! Well, SanctumArts was a beginner once, too....

Okay, here's a couple of pointers.

First of al, you've got to model that monster. So you need a modeling application. There's a boatload of them, from free (Wings3D, Anim8tor, Blender) to extremely expensive (3DS Max, Maya, Houdini).
There is no "best" modeling application - the "best" application is the one that suits you. Downlaod the free apps, download trial versions of the non-free apps, and try them out.

Second, modeling for Poser has a couple of "rules". I can highly recommend the book "Secrets of Figure Creation for Poser" by B.L. Render. Not only does that book explain the ins and outs of rigging, it also gives good pointers on how to model for Poser.

The second stage would be the basic rigging. Again, "Secrets of Figure Creation" is a great guideline.
Third stage would be UV mapping. Depending on your modeling tool, you can do the UV mapping in the tool itself, or you can use an external UV mapping tool. UVMapper Classic by Steve Cox is a popular freeware UV mapping tool, while I've heard that headus UVLayout is extremely powerful - and fairly expensive.
I wouldn't worry too much about texturing. Procedural shaders in Poser 5 and higher can give you a great monster skin, including eyes. But if you want to create image maps, you'll need a 2D imaging tool like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro or The Gimp, plus the UV layout templates you create using your UV mapping tool.

EasyPose is a certain rigging trick that is very well explained in - again - "Secrets of Figure Creation". Ajax sells a tool, "EasyPose Underground" that speeds up the creation of EasyPose by a fair bit, but it is not necessary to use that tool, everything can be done using a simple text editor (even Notepad will do, but a programming editor like EditPad or Textpad is easier to work with).

You can also look for any and all tutorials by Dr. Geep. Literally thousands of tutorials on everything Poser, including figure creation. It'll get you started, but for the in-depth knowledge you need to build a GOOD figure, "Secrets of Figure Creation" is indispensible.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

Darn! I should have taken a tour of Dr. Geep studios back when I was living in Tampee.

I shall look into these. Thank you very much.

Look for a tutorial by Quinlor about figure creation. It's in Wings, from model to rigging, uvmapping, and other 'soon-to-be-explained' concepts. Can't post the link, but Google it, it should come up.
