Subject: Imported figures into Vue 7 are too dark - lighting issues

3DNeo ( ) posted Sat, 14 February 2009 at 6:52 AM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 10:40 PM

I have gone to the Vue forum over at e-on and searched here, but still can not find a detailed thread that explains how to import and light figures properly inside Vue 7. After spending some time getting my Poser figures to import, all of them appear too dark. Also, I read the tutorial at:

http://www.silverblades-suitcase.com/tutorials/htm/18.html

This is quite good, but it is more about scaling down rather than lighting. It did not fix the problem.

Here is what I am doing:

  1. I setup the scene in Poser Pro and save the scene.

  2. I import the scene into Vue 7, select to auto resize the figures scale and tried both the merged meshes and unmerged meshes.

  3. The scene loads fine, but all the figures are totally dark, even if other lights in Vue are added.

I read the tutorial at the link above, but I am not clear on what meshes to change specifically in my V4/M4 figures nor does it seem to fit what Vue 7 does now with the new interface changes. I thought it was just the lighting of the mesh, but I can't find a way in view to edit the meshes of a V4 figure the way it says to in that tutorial. Yes, I see the parts of each figure when I do an import WITHOUT merging the meshes together, but when you look at them they don't appear to have a way to change the lighting for each mesh (if that makes sense). At least going by the tutorial above.

Now, I am new to Vue 7, but I have been over the intro in the excellent AsileFX Getting Started with Vue 6. So, I can light a Vue scene just fine, though still a novice. The problem lies with the imported figures only, the rest I can work with the lighting and at least see a difference. No matter what I try for the figues it's always the same. i have also tried importing, saving the scene in Vue format, then re-importing. Same thing with the darkness.

So, can anyone out there help with solving the issue and give some detailed instructions on how to get the imported figures to light properly using the Vue 7 lights? I simply can't find a detailed guide anywhere on this and would REALLY appreciate some help here.

Thanks.

Jeff

I think the mainissue here is the fact that Poser in general does a strange thing. It makes the highlight color black but with a huge size and relative high intensity. Seems to be perfect for the Poser render engine but not for all others (in this world). So you must work on the materials and correct this - to white but smaller size etc. Then you will get what you expect. SkinVue btw mainly does exactly this. Correct the strangeness of the Poser materials so that they work well in Vue. Of course with some more things, but this originally was the intention probably.

This is a known bug that e-on are aware of but I'm sure it was fixed in SR1!
Your problem I have had, it doesn't seem to be a Poser issue though and I have been unable to replicate it after the first service release, I take it you have tried that!!

Sometimes, before SR1 this could be "fixed" by exiting Vue, restarting it and importing again, but not every time!
Vue imports Poser materials just fine, I never have to alter my Poser imports, it does however have serious issues with poser shaders at the moment, again this is something e-on and Smith micro are working on and this is a Poser problem rather than a Vue one!

I toon my people quite often and keepthe poser shaders.  In this case the figures don't light up in vue with vue lights.  However if I up the ambient light to 3 x instead of one in poser then it looks okay in vue.

Found out some more details on this. Yes, you are correct on this being a known bug. However, I have been in talks with e-on about this.

First, everyone should know that if you try out the software to learn on it before you buy with the Vue 7 "PLE", it does NOT have the software updates or patches applied. This came straight from e-on. So, what you may run into is some of the issues not been patched.

Also, they do advise looking at the materials using the material editor. There is a known issue that Poser imports have their highlights set to dark (black) on most items and also the highlight may be too bright depending upon type of material which needs adjusting. This is more of a Poser problem as mentioned than Vue 7 and the only way to fix it is by hand.

Hopefully both Smith Micro and e-on will work closely on resolving these lighting issues soon. I expect it would be Poser to update their "Poser Pro" and "Poser 7" with a service patch update, but maybe e-on has some things they can do too. Bottom line is this needs to get worked out, so hopefully it won't be a whole year. However, there are some workarounds as mentioned for now, that is provided it is NOT "Vue 7 PLE" in which case there are bugs there with no patches as mentioned above.
