Not yet Shazza, maybe something I'll look at at fag break LOL, there is a shop just around the corner that sells wee flashlights and stuff :)

I have been watching this challenge thread with interest and enjoying all the impressive and creative submissions.  This definitely takes me out of my comfort zone, but like Shari, I have also been studying light painting recently, and here is my first attempt.

Maria! This is a knock-out! My cup of tea and so very much more than I have been able to do as hard as I try! Stellar!!!

Wow, Flannel, Mick, Garlor and now Maria, you people are sooo creative. So many ways one can apply lighting to create that sublime "post work" effect straight from your camera. I love the fact that one can control lighting to achieve this.

I've been playing with bananas, silver tea pots and the like all evening but every time I see a new upload come in, I hesitate.

Come on Ronnie, what have you been up to with your wee lights?

Don't hesitate Piet :)
Tex you hit the bigtime with this one, gorgeous image.

Thanks, PJ, Piet, and Ronnie.  Just a first attempt, but a fascinating challenge here that has me experimenting on something other than birds, and lots of practice needed.

PD154 ( ) posted Mon, 16 February 2009 at 4:21 PM

Sorry Piet, just noticed that I am afraid I have not obtained any wee lights yet :(...a real bummer because I am fair itching to give it a go, I borrowed a small flashlight a while back to give it a whirl, with some pointers Adam had sent me, but lost those test shots in a crash, I must get some form of small flashlight :)

Hello Friends. I would like to play too.  This is fantastic.

I was not able to find the link to this thread, but I knew, that Tara had link so I got it from her wonderful gallery. Thank you Tara :)
Dont get me wrong. I am just so dumb finding links, so if they are not shining in my face, I dont find them
Well here is a shot i took saturday , when the evening sun was shining on my blinds. At once I thought of this thread.

busi2ness ( ) posted Tue, 17 February 2009 at 3:22 AM

Welcome to the challenge Helle! Excellent execution in quality and shapes of lighting. I hope you don't stop partaking from now on.

Thanks to people like Ronnie and Tara the forum seems to be well advertised in the galleries. I am sure there are more people who added the link. Thanks guys!

I played with a LED flash light as source last night and was amazed at the possibilities of replicating an umbrella reflector, lighting from different angles. Watch this space, I will upload soon.

Hello Shari.
Thank you for the welcome. I see there are alot of gorgeous stuff to live up to. Amazing and very exiting to see how much the light works with our cameras, when we let it.. :-)))

Here goes, a 30 second exposure, the only lighting was a LED light brushed from side to side.

Excellent Piet, I got a little flashlight today, have not tried it yet, it's not a led it has the regular bulb in it, but I might difuse it a bit with tissue.

busi2ness ( ) posted Tue, 17 February 2009 at 12:26 PM

Great stuff Ronnie, I would like to see what the color temperature is of the ordinary bulb. I think the LED has cast too much blue, I did not want to tweak in PS, it is straight out the camera, just cropped.

Good luck, send me some of your results.

Piet, Like your result with the LED and a 30 second exposure. What do you mean "brushed side to side"? Moved from side to side manually throughout the exposure time?

P.S. Had to pull your Cuties...too much logo. But that gives me one more upload I think:)

busi2ness ( ) posted Wed, 18 February 2009 at 12:45 AM

Yes Bill,I moved the LED side to side but also the light beams, swept from side to side covering the areas the way I wanted to.

Now Bill show us what you mean!

Thanks for the picture Ronnie, it was passed on to me last night. It does cast a warmer glow on the subject and I love the results. It opens up so many new avenues in control over (constructive) lighting. What I love about the techniques is how one can completely hide any distraction from the background. It's a pity we cannot share it in here BUT I will work on a plan without getting me kicked outa here for bending rules...

Excellent one Barb, I love the rays crowning the subject matter.

Do you realize that we've been going strong in this forum for 18 days now and we still hit on very educational and creative techniques?

@Piet and Shazz
Well it's in my gallery now, I posted it today :)
Sure thing Piet you are very welcome, I did help the warmth along a little by setting my WB to daylight, the first shots I took were balanced for tungsten light and were a little too cold, the next lot were done with a manual WB and seemed like a bright white floodlight, so I settled for the warmer option, and I also got rid of the horrid pattern that comes from standard flashlights, by putting a cig rolling paper over the head of the flashlight to soften the beam.

Uff, 18th of February and I have never started here! Hurry up, boy, the round X has begun, and you are sleeping!

Ahhemmnnn........... This here is my first, and I hope I ´ m not too late. Wonderful pics here, one better as the last. Great, great, great!!!!!  Which is the finest? I don ´t know, but who cares?  Seems as if some people here have a lot of fun!

Pic was taken today for this contest - and to warm the feet and hands, too. We have heavy snowfall till 2 days (they call it "Global warming" LOL) and I have waited for some winter pics from Berlin till 3 years. So today was my day . It ended inside of the Kaiser-Wilhelm - Memory church, a warm and cosy place, and an organ player played his pieces for the sunday morning celebration.  What can a poor boy with cold fingers asking for?

I'm enjoying this SO much!  :)  Everyone is posting such wonderful images, and actually THINKING about light instead of just finding images that will work for the challenge.  Awesome!  I think I've learned more from this challenge than any other.  Great idea, Shari, and fabulous work, everybody!

I know, I know, I've still got one to post for my three (as Piet reminds me from time to time).  I'll get there!  I'm still thinking, and there are nine days left.

Ahh Bill, I am glad you came out of your corner, still in time to have fun AND display your work of lighting.  Things are slow for us buggers because most of us used out 3 uploads already. Bring them on.

Ronnie I am glad you pasted that link to your upload, I still think that's one of the best from our challenge.

Tara, have you uploaded all 3 yours? Are we waiting for you lady?:glare:

I can't wait either David, I heard a rumor Shari is busy on the new challenge... my lips are sealed.

auntietk ( ) posted Thu, 19 February 2009 at 11:47 PM

Yes, yes, you're still waiting on me.  Between the tips I've gotten from you and from RJ, I MIGHT be able to get one of those fancy paint-with-light shots.  We'll see.  Nine days, my friend!  :)  If I post my third shot, what will you have to look forward to?

I was at a local home improvement warehouse yesterday afternoon and got some great shots.  One of the ones I WISH were great (but is blurry and NOT my best work!) is a shot of a man standing in the lighting department, looking at all the fixtures (which are all blazing light, of course), and he's wearing sunglasses.

The shot was sort of surreptitious, and I only got two - one blurry and one even blurrier - but lordy, was that a wonderful sight!  :)

Hey all, here's my last entry... my stupid camera has decided it doesn't want to function too well on the batteries I have for it, so I've had to go into my archives because I don't know WHEN I'll be able to sort that out!!

This was a school event a couple of months ago - I of course spent most of the time behind my lens, haha - it's a great excuse for being politely antisocial!!

busi2ness ( ) posted Fri, 20 February 2009 at 1:51 AM

Now that's what I call "scaling a braai!" or to use Tara's expression: "surreptitous" photography! That smoke haze cause an excellent diffuser for the back light. I love it, it is so South African and I bet a bit spiteful while our northern hemisphere friends have to cope with lots of snow.

Can't WAIT for next month's challenge now!  I bought special batteries for my camera TODAY!  Just couldn't stand the thought of being "cameraless" - it's like losing a limb!!

I hear ya Kathy, I used to use countless alkalines until I found the ubiquitous NiMH rechargables, now of course my Canon has a re-chargable battery pack, but I still use the re-chargables for my trackball and any other things with AA size bats :)

WB Daylight
small flashlight with no snoot (stood behind camera/tripod)

Tried various angles, longer times and different WB settings for follow-on shots.

Next step is to get more elaborate with my set-up...that may be the harder part for me.
