Read something the other day about panning the camera to get a sense of motion.  It's a technique that I've heard about and seen before, but I never had a camera that I could try it with.  Now I do!

Funny thing is, it's not as difficult as some might think.  Took a few tries to get it right, but I think I could do it with just about anything now.

Anyone else played with this?  I would love to see some examples of what others around here have done.

Oh yeah, technical stuff.  Shot with shutter priority, 70mm, f25, 110 sec exposure, ISO 100 on a Sony a200 body with kit lens.  Didn't know it at the time, but apparently the a200 has the thing where it auto-detects horizontal panning, because I had SSS turned on and it doesn't look like it tried to compensate.

Thanks for looking!  I've shown you mine, now you show me yours!

These are all so fine!  Joe, the bg of the heron makes the shot work so very well, adding a certain tension and urgency for a bird which has just snagged part of lunch.  Yikes, you folks do nice work here.

it's a fun technique and one I find can be made much easier by image stabilisation ;)

I've only really tried it once or twice myself, here are a couple from the first time I got chance, taken in Beaucaire, France. I know the cyclist (friend of the family), not the motorcyclist though..

Outstanding shots, everybody!

Piet, that was what I was hoping when I posted this.  That maybe someone would go out and try something new.  (Like painting with light.  I still need to get off my butt and give that one a try.) If you ain't pushin', you ain't learnin'!
