Subject: Poser 7 at Daz 99.00

I was wondering what I would see in upgrading to poser 7 from poser 6, 99.00 is a real good price for the full version. I just want to make sure that I will see improvements in render quality and overall performance.

DAZ is selling Poser 7, and Smith Micro is selling Hexegon. Interesting!

From what version of Poser will you be upgrading?

Probably edited for spelling, grammer, punctuation, or typos.

I too was wondering if it is a worthwhile upgrade to move from Poser 6 to Poser 7. I've seen the list of "improvements" but was wondering in a real-world environment if those enhancements were really worth it. I also noticed that Poser 7 has been out for some time now and didn't know if there was a Poser 8 on the horizon. I have seen some here refer to Poser Pro as the path forward on Poser and that there may not be a version 8...still, it would be nice to know.

I also noticed that at the smith-micro site you can get the packaged version for $99, but I didn't see that option at DAZ (although they give you the option of burning software to a CD). Does anyone know if only the electronic version is available at DAZ?

I think DAZ only has the download/burn to DVD version.

Useful additions to P7 include:

  • Multiple levels of undo. P6 has very limited undo operations that don't work for all changes that can be made in the program.
  • Icludes PhilC/Kamilche PuppetMaster to improve transferring poses from one figure to the next
  • Improved morphing tools for creating new morphs
  • Multi-thread rendering for duo/quad core computers which doubles/quadruples render speed
  • New content. I forget what P7 has, besides Simon and Sydney, that's not in P6, but you can compare the P6 content with the visual index I created for P7. It's still available at http://poser.maredias.de/_Poser7-Complete.zip

Includes Universal Poses, very similar to, but not PuppetMaster. PuppetMaster is sold separately still at CP.

Kamilche had the following to say at PhilC's forum.  Essentially, Universal Poses is the old version of PuppetMaster incorporated to some degree into Poser 7. There is a new version out, but it's something SmithMicro is doing on their own without her assistance. I would guess that the new version provides the setups for new figures that aren't in the Poser 7 version, but I haven't looked into what that would be.

If you have Poser 7, the technology behind PuppetMaster is built in, and should be working when EF puts their service pack out for it. Until then, keep this in mind:

PuppetMaster works on Poser versions 4 through 6.

Figure setup files created for Poser 4 through 6, will work in Poser 7.

You can't set up new figures to be Universal Posing compatible in Poser 7, but you can in Poser 4 through 6 by buying PuppetMaster and using the tools provided. When you're done, just drag the setup files to the applicable folder inside of Poser 7, to make that figure 'Universal Posing' compatible.

I hope this clears up any issues. I can understand EF''s reluctance to put out a Poser 7 version of PuppetMaster, since most of the technology is incorporated into Poser 7, just not the setup tools, but it's out of my hands, since it's no longer my product.

For me Poser 7 is way more buggy than Poser 6, the only thing that keeps me sane using it is...

  1. The multiple undo's
  2. The fact it now saves relative paths rather than absolute

Poser 7 seems to run better for me, if I keep my drives defragged. I also like that if I load a light set, the old set is deleted. And it has a scripts drop down menu. Render options vary some. And it "handles" better, like a new car vs. the same kinda car that youv'e had a few years. The old one still works but the new one is better. It's not so different that you have to totally learn poser again.

Rendering in external process: will enable you to render more complex scenes that would fail in P6
Rendering can use up to 4 GB of address space (on a 64 bit OS) or 3 GB (on WinXP 32 bit with the /3GB startup switch), whereas P6 is limited to 2 GB.

Texture filtering is no longer a scene-wide setting, it's set per image map node. Can be a PITA if you want to set texture filtering for the entire scene, but there's a Python utility here in freestuff that'll allow you to set the texture filtering per actor, figure or scene.

Zooming in orthographic views works differently: zooming now occurs centered on the screen center, no longer centered on universe center. A significant usability improvement IMO.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter
