A recent case of....yes.

22 year-old John Rempel gave Nigerian scammers $150,000 while chasing what he thought was a $12.8 million inheritance. Rempel ended up borrowing money from his parents and uncle, and even traveled all the way to London to meet with the scammers in person.

Well, yes... but if one is clever enough, he/she may be able to scam the scammer! LOL!
I love this guy's site.... http://www.spamscamscam.com/read_letters.php**

**Dean Cameron has been writing about these scams for several years now.
One of the things he mentions on his site is how he conned the potential scammer into sending him (something like) 15 dollars. HAhaha!

The money was supposedly to cover the cost of some "forms" Dean 'needed' in order to withdraw the money he was being asked for. So the scammer sent him the funds. LMAO!

I am a scambaiter too, although not associated with 419eaters. Using a dedicated email address, created exclusively for this purpose, I regularly answer to scam emails (when I have time, of course) and I try to catch their attention as long as I can.

The purpose is simple: if they are busy writing to me, they are not writing to someone else who could fall in their trap, and maybe I am saving someone. Of course, the first scam emails are sent automatically, but if you answer them, then the scammer must actually sit in front of a keyboard and waste his time trying to lure you with more details, hoping to get your money.

Of course SCAMBAITING CAN BE A DANGEROUS PASTIME, SO I DO NOT RECOMMEND TRYING IT. Scammers are dangerous people, and they COULD backtrack you. I take a lot of precautions and NEVER disclose the tiniest bit of real personal information. So please, I repeat, do not try it at home....

(BTW, I have collected a lot of pictures from scammers, but no money yet.... )

I wish someone would stop the dating scam "women" from other countries type of scam.

My youngest son got sucked into one of those when he first got his divorce and I had to work furiously behind his back to get rid of the scammer.  He was "in love" and wouldn't believe me.

She supposedly lived in Colorado...but as soon as she had him "hooked" with her words and one fantastic picture..lol   she had an "emergency" and had to go to Nigeria to take care of her sick mother.... (yeah right)  then she kept asking for money for food....

I finally got it taken care of and he has since met a local girl he's happy with..but that is a shame for those people to prey on lonely people...

I second that. If you don't know exactly what you are doing, leave it to those who do.

These scams are foul and disgusting;  some creeps trying to steal money from unsuspecting and kind-hearted people...   and in some cases have succeeded...
They should all be hung up by their short hairs for using a great thing like the net for that kind of low-life criminal behavior...   My email used to get bombarded by this kind of junk until I went on a deletion rampage...   anytime I get one of those it is immediately deleted, and over time I get very few of these now..

Best thing to do is report them the minute you see it in your email because these creeps need to be stopped as much as humanly possible...   there is nothing funny about what they are doing, to me it's the same as robbing someone in an alley...  too bad they aren't prosecuted more often for this type of crime...

When I get one of those scam letters I play stupid.

I'll ask if Nigeria is near Russia or some other country.

Then I tell them I am not interested in money because the world is going to end in 2012 when the Earth is going to be hit by a planet the size of Jupiter, but the world governments are keeping this a big secret.

I tell them I my phone will soon be disconnected because I lost my job as a cook.

Then I ask them to send me an authentic Nigerian ( or what ever country they are from ) recipe because I wish to learn as many recipes before 2012.

To be a good sport, I send them a recipe.

Mr. Omar just received a recipe for Orange Pork, lol.

I mean no disrespect to the people who are of the Islamic faith, but Muslim folks do not eat pork, so it is even funnier I sent Mr. Omar a pork recipe.

I must have a sick sense of humor.

LOL! I admit, after finding the spamscamscam site all about how the guy played around with such scammers, I was tempted to do the same. :p

But using a different email addy doesn't always hide or protect the sender. I was surprised to learn that even if one uses certain freebie email hosts, recipients can still see the sender's originating IP in the email's source.

If you must join the game, do it at your local library! :P teeeheee!

After I send them the first letter with a recipe, they never write back.

LOL! 419 was the site somebody emailed me about when the scams first became widely known!  At the time, I had just received a couple of those scam emails; so thank the Good Lord for paranoid people who cram their friends' inboxes every time they hear about something like this!

I laughed when I read the line at 419 that says, "Do not be fooled into thinking scammers operate from a specific part of the world." I kept getting emails 'from Nigeria' that contained European country codes. lolol

Sending ANY response puts you on a mailing list that is given to tons of these folk.. You just set yourself up for more of the same..  I send every single one to the FBI email fraud devision with a copy of the email with the headers included.. It always ends up discontinued and I guess word got around because it has been 3 years since I got my last one..

Very wise!

I always had funny thoughts of entangling the scammers like Dean did; but in the end, self-preservation and cowardice won. lol!

I wuzzn't gunna send my IP willingly to anybody, regardless of how much fun it would be to mess them about! :p
