Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 22 10:18 pm)
It's odd but the Pentium 866s at work on Win2000 Pro seem as sluggish ast my old AMD K6-350 on Win98 and the same RAM. Is that just Win 2000 Pro haveing more code taking up CPU reasources? On the good side I've been told Win2000 Pro can handle more RAM. Over 512mb which is better than Win98s ability to handle RAM. Can any one confirm any of this?
I ran into a problem with Win98SE, Voluptuous Vicki & the Noa texture. After one render, if I tried another render Poser would freeze & I would have to end the process. It was suggested that I try Win2K. I did so with a multiboot config. Have not had any issues yet & it actually takes less time for Poser to start up & I would estimate about a 3-5% decrease in rendering times. Definatley make sure you have Direct X 8.0a for Win2K installed & the latest Win2K video drivers. Also, if you have a VIA Chipset board, make sure you have the latest MB drivers & enable UDMA. My system: Duron 800, ABIT KT7-A MB, 768 megs SDRAM, 32 meg GeForce II MX.
win2K seems to have a weird bug with Poser - mine sometimes refuses to render and claims there's "insufficient disk space to render at current resolution" even though i've got tons of virtual memory and definitely enough RAM and free disk space... IIRC, Colm had the same problem. So I would go with Win98.
I use an Athlon 1.3Ghz on a FIC AZ11E motherboard with 1.25GB of SDRAM (two 512MB dimms and one 256MB dimm). I have a mobile harddrive bay installed in the PC. I have a 45GB drive formated NTFS running Win2K, and a 30GB hardrive running WinME. They both seem to work about the same speed, but Win2K is far more stable. I had a lot more trouble getting Win2k to work with my configuration then I did with WinME. My CD burner had to be updated, as well as my $20 dollar modem. I still cannot play some AVI's on my ATI Wonder that were recorded using the same, even though the TV tuner and video input works fine. I'd say go for Win2K, if your system is compliant.
I have run Poser on WinNT 4.0 with SP6a & hadn't had any problems other than rendering is a bit slow. There are also issue with vid drives & the fact that you are stuck with DirectX 3. Win2K Pro has since been the best. I didn't try it on Win2K Server as I still run NT 4.0 server on my server. Tried 2K Server bu had problems with Win9X machines loosing network connection after about 6-8 hours. But, this was before SP1 came out so I don't know if that has been corrected. If u are using NT 4.0, make sure u use SP6a if u are connecting to a Win2K Server with NTFS drives. 2K uses NTFS 5 & u need SP6a to access them correctly. Also, needed if u use DFS (distibuted File System) on the server. Also, if u are looking for more ram, try www.tigerdirect.com. They have abundle of 2 256 meg 8ns SDRAM DIMMS for $99. Eowyn: your problem might have been that your paging file settings were too low. If u have the space, try increasing it to min-800 max-1500 (800 megs & 1.5 gig0 or something close to that. That might correct your problem.
