Subject: shadow only

ice-boy ( ) posted Fri, 01 May 2009 at 3:46 PM · edited Sat, 14 December 2024 at 1:53 AM

i am trying to render a shadow only pic. but not with shadows from the figure. but only shadows from the hair.
basicly i want to see shadows from the hair on the face. but i dont want shadows from the nose,lashes,.....
can i somehow render out only the shadows from the hair?

You can set the figure as shadow catcher only, so only the shadows from the hair will be on the shadow only render.

if i set the figure as a shadow catcher then the arm, nose and everything will make a shadow.

i am asking here for DM shadows. because if i would use raytraced shadows then i would make the figure invisible for raytracing.

isnt it amazing that its 2009 and in poser you can not turn of casting shadows for the whole figure.
isnt this just amazing?

Hu... i've never realized that, good point :)

Indeed Poser is lacking a lot of simple features that are included in other renderers since a looong time.

if figure (not hair) is converted to obj, it speeds up manip in poser and "cast shadows" is just one click away.  may be advanced topic.

but its not an object. its a figure.

I'm unclear what you are really trying to do.  Can't you just select all the parts that you don't want to cast shadows, head, neck, eyes , collars etc. and just uncheck "Casts Shadows" so that only the hair is casting shadows?

this is a lot of unchecking

If you are familiar with Python you could probably write a script to do this.
As for me since it would take me a long time to figure out how to write a Python script, I would open the file in a text editor and change all the castsShadow values from 1 to 0 then reopen the file in Poser and turn Casts shadows back on for the hair,

thats interesting.

maybe someone already wrotte a script like that.

raven ( ) posted Fri, 01 May 2009 at 8:26 PM

Attached Link: http://www.runtimedna.com/Utilities-Vol1-Figures.html

This script set by semidieu at RDNA has that functionality, as well as some other useful ones too.

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Fri, 01 May 2009 at 9:34 PM

yeah, I would go with the script rather than convert figure to obj.  much fewer clicks AFAIK.

ice-boy ( ) posted Sat, 02 May 2009 at 6:42 AM

nothing aginst you all guys here. but it makes me so mad that i would need to pay 5 dollars so that i can turn of shadows on my figure.

i wonder if this option will be in poser 8.  its like having a render that doesnt render shadows. this is an option that should be in poser  5 years ago.

raven ( ) posted Sat, 02 May 2009 at 12:51 PM

I don't blame you, I'd put a request in for a script in the Python forum.
I originally got it for $2.50 for the convenience of the other scripts that are included too. I had no problem with it as I looked at the purchase as a way of thanking semidieu for some of the freebie scripts he's done that I'd previously used (and at times requested).

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Sat, 02 May 2009 at 4:16 PM

o.k., I didn't know that the script was $5. whilst it would be cheaper to convert figure to obj,  would still urge users to buy that script, and others by semidieu.  in re: a feature of poser 8 and earlier where one renders with no shadows (e.g. nostril glow), that's already available, as seen in many poser gallery images and even some commercial promo images.

i meant that it would be nice if i could uncheck '' noshadows'' on teh whole figure.

you can do it for raytracing. but you can not do it for shadows

ice-boy ( ) posted Sun, 03 May 2009 at 7:00 AM

is there maybe a free script that turns everything in the scene shadows of?  then i could only check the hair and it would be fast.

A quick search of the Poser Python forum turned up these 2 threads.

In ockham's post, save the attachment (looks like a broken image link) as a .txt file and then change it to a .py extension for a figure shadows on/off script.

Or this thread http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?message_id=2710897  for a script from mason (you will have to copy the code and make the script yourself) for a script which will do it also.

thanks. will try out.

i noticed something. bagginsbill skin shader makes the shadow more vibrant. with faking SSS. if i add teh shadow from the hair after in photoshop it looks grey. it stands out very much. here is an example. i rendered without shadows on the hair. then later i rendered only raytraced shadows on hair. i added the shadows with photoshop. but they dont look right because they are grey.

Try playing around with different Layer Blending Modes and Opacity and see if you can find something more to your liking.
