Tunde, my nerves are not made for this sort of thing...at least not at the moment. Yet, I am finding much joy in it all and my wife is happy with it.
A local newspaper got in touch with me. They do not pay for photos...and I don't want to sell rights to my photos, either.. But they did ask if I would consider submitting photos to them for the tagline credits. Likely I will but will have to work that out. I am not here to be a free photog for them but we will see what their true purpose is soon enough. That is not a bad thought...more exposure and it could be fun.
Looks good Tom and three sales is a good start! About the free photos for the newspaper, ask them if they are giving away their papers. If they say no, then say "Maybe I'll start giving away photos when you start giving away papers and advertising; you first!" I think free photos for a simple credit is not worth much to you IMHO.

looks good Tom, congrats on getting it all together, and for the early sales!
seems an ideal location.. when I had a few of mine available for sale last year they were located in a bar and part of a larger event... really nice during the day, when people are more likely to sit and look around them at the decor, than at night, when there's music going, and people are definitely more vocal in their appreciation of their surrounds, but in all honesty are looking more at the people trotting their stuff than the walls around them..! I doubt many people would sit down without noticing your works, they make a nice impact.
as for the paper, I'd try and find out what the print-run/ circulation is and base your decision on that.... if it's not that big they may not have much of a readership and I'd take the publicity to get more people along on basis of a small, one-off licence fee. If that means you might lose the publicity, then I'd do it for free (again on the basis of one-off use for publicity).... after all people can see larger versions of it without buying if they come along anyway, but if they don't know where to come to then you're still in the starting blocks ;) .... just some thoughts....I'd be well happy to be at the stage you're at, nice job and good luck for the coming weeks!

Wonderful, Tom! It looks great! Very light and inviting. I'm also amazed at how many photos you were able to get up without it looking over crowded.
Congrats on the first few sales, it's a start and can only get better as more people see it.
As for the paper, I'm always under the assumption that ANY publicity is good, so you may want to consider letting them have a few (what I would call stock photos) of the area or a special event ....
IN EXCHANGE for maybe them doing a short article on your exhibit, or a discount on an ad to get your name known locally. Just a thought. I know I would want to be very selective on what I "give" away.
Whoo Hoo!!! Go Tom!!!

Bentchick's idea is great! Get them to do an article on your exhibit, or a free ad perhaps. That way, they get the free photo and you get something tangible, and still it costs them nothing so why would they refuse? You could even write the copy about your exhibit for them.
You've got me thinking about trying something similar, so once more I'm feeding at the Renderosity knowledge trough.

whaleman, I believe we all feed here...yet not as swine but as good dinner company and sometimes a toast to raise. I will get the article published, even if small. Unfortunately, we are at a low point for newspapers in that city; old is dying and new ones trying to shake it out and be the leader.
I had a small joy today when I went by the exhibit. It was a most slow part of the afternoon and there was an elderly man looking at one wall of images. He took his time, one image to the next, spending extra time on a few. Then he turned as if leaving, then again to another group of images. When I left, he was still looking.
I had a wonderful sense of joy. I was seeing this man see something, I don't know what...but he was being invited and drawn to the images by his view. Yes, that did give me a sense of joy. : )
I received an interesting comment today. I imagine a few years ago before digital this would not have come up. One photo is particularily interesting to a lady. She wondered, could she have that one in black and white? This surprised me. Well, it is a newer age.
In speaking to one viewer, his wife does photos and loves low grade toy camera shots and does some pinhole shots. This reminded me of the lomograpy thread about low grade photos with speial looks from a particular Russian camera. She uses film...problem now is finding a decent lab in the neighborhood and then the scanning to use digital processes or put on the net. Also, finding film is a problem with some of the better old line photo shops around here dropping out of sight and producers apparently dropping some film choices. This is just a comment,, nothing much to do with the exhibit except for the comment received. .
You folks have been so very, very encouraging. I truly appreciate it. I needed it. Tom.
I am SMILING...VERY TRULY I AM.
This was a first for me, being the person behind an exhibit of almost 40 photo prints. I went into this shy and with trepidation. I end it with joy and a feeling of success. Success in selling? Yes, I did sell more than expected but that was cream and frosting for me.
My intent was simply to "do it", to have an exhibit and realize responses positive, negative and neutral from the wide variety of viewers. In that, the exhibit was certainly a success. I have learned and can apply that to the next exhibit, a smaller display I am now negotiating. The owner of the cafe gallery said he received more comment from this exhibit than any thusfar and that people spent more time viewing image to image than in previous showings. (All sorts of art has been on display with photos exhibited the least.)
My heart felt thanks to all of you. Special thanks to tennesseecowgirl, Lynell, for coming over and looking. It is great to meet friends in this way. The encouragement of Renderosity members and "camera leaning" gleaned here over the years put me in the position to actually have the exhibit. Thanks to all. Tom.

I went by today during a lull in business and got photos of the display. We really got this finalized on Tuesday and as of today 3 sales have been made. I am no so concerned about sales as getting more accustomed to doing this sort of thing.
Yes, it is much more costly than anticipated to make it look decent. Yes, comments have been quite favorable and the sales so far since Tuesday are an added joy.
Here 'tis... Tom.
