Subject: Monthly Vue Challenges

MikeJ ( ) posted Tue, 10 July 2001 at 6:20 PM · edited Fri, 10 January 2025 at 2:23 PM

Hi all. :) We've been doing these Vue Challenges (VC's) for around 7 or 8 months now. I was just wondering if y'all liked it the way it is, or if you would prefer something different. In the Challenge Arena here, as well as in the Bryce forum, the idea is to create a picture on a theme of some sort, then at the end of the time period, the members vote, and the winner gets a little plaque of some sort to post on his/her website, if desired. And the winner also gets to state what the following months' VC will be. I really kind of like that idea, so what do the rest of you think about it? And if we have a good amount of interest in the idea, I suppose the first "challenge" would have to be to be the one who designs the Winners' logo. :) Cheers, Mike

Love the idea, there's nothing better to inspire than being given a theme & trying to create it visually. Count me in!

MikeJ ( ) posted Tue, 10 July 2001 at 6:48 PM

Okay, cool--- 1 vote "For" :)

SAMS3D ( ) posted Tue, 10 July 2001 at 6:50 PM

Yes, Yes, Yes, except I don't know what VC means? Could you explain....still new here. Sharen:)

MikeJ ( ) posted Tue, 10 July 2001 at 6:52 PM

VC = Vue Challenge :) OK, 2 votes "For" :)

SAMS3D ( ) posted Tue, 10 July 2001 at 6:55 PM

How exactly does this work? And how do we find out about it? Thanks for the info. Sharen

MikeJ ( ) posted Tue, 10 July 2001 at 7:00 PM

Wel, Sharen, we've been doing them for a while now, but "my" new idea (as I said, based on how the Challenge Arena and Bryce forums do it), is to include voting, and a winner. The winner gets the "prize" of setting the theme for the following month's challenge. Up above this forum, in tat little box which has all the links in it, will always be a link to the Challenge which is current: rules, motif, etc. You can see above where Varian has posted his "Getting Primitive" challenge, by clicking on the link of the same name. :)

I think it sounds good, Mike. It may actually help keep me focused on doing them! lol Umm...are you saying the first challenge would be to design the winners logo? Rich

SAMS3D ( ) posted Tue, 10 July 2001 at 7:14 PM

I really hate to bother you all, but you know I clicked that Getting Primative and I don't get anything, page won't come up? Is it because it is over? Sharen

Axe555 ( ) posted Tue, 10 July 2001 at 7:31 PM

You clicked on the 'Here's how to Participate'? It worked for me. Rich

Here it is. OK, so we now have 4 votes "For" :) Yeah, Rich, I suppose that the first one would be for designing the logo, but maybe not to replace next months' VC, but rather to supplement it. In any event, we'll also have to see what Varian has to say about all this.

Varian ( ) posted Tue, 10 July 2001 at 10:32 PM

moi? I think it's a great idea! I'm a big fan of target-oriented challenges of many sorts. What we've had in the forum (since Mike began it) has been more technically-oriented (clouds, paths, planets, etc.) A general theme sounds good, too (rain, beach, flowers, urban, whatever) Y'know, I like both. Any chances of fitting both kinds in each month? (I don't ask for much, eh?) :D

tradivoro ( ) posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 1:12 AM

Count me in too Mike, I definitely vote for the deal where you get a prize plaque and get to choose the next challenge... :) I really think the challenge for this month is a good one, and I'm working on a scene for it, done entirely in Vue with primitives and booleans...

jarm ( ) posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 1:32 AM

I'll be in the car

Rynn ( ) posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 2:24 AM

I think it's a good idea. What's a challenge without a winner? ;) BTW, maybe in a month or so I can finaly participate again. If hopefully all my computer problems are over. :)

Cheers ( ) posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 2:44 AM

I think it is a ROTTEN idea, the worst you have ever come up with. If you think I'm going to participate then you've got another thing coming...it's pathetic!...no,no,no, I'm only joking ;) COUNT ME IN!! :D Cheers

Cool! OK, so I guess we might as well consider it a done deal. The rest of this month will still of course be "Getting Primitive", and then in August will be our first of the "new" challenges. We do need a plaque or a banner of some sort--- something like E-on's POTD award or something. So how about this: Anyone who wishes to participate creates something, then we vote on it, and whoever wins the "award logo challenge", gets to choose the VC's for August. I like the idea of having two: How about: One challenge based on a theme, and a secondary challenge based on something technical---something that goes with the theme? For example, say the theme was After the Storm or something like that. It's accompanying technical challenge might be on how to get sunlight to stream through storm clouds. Both motifs would be announced by the winner. How's that sound?

dolly ( ) posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 3:51 AM

im in mike great idea as well it will be cool and fun taboot

BrianR ( ) posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 5:55 AM

August sounds good for me, gives me a chance to finish off some other projects first :O) So first you want a winner logo? created in Vue?

MikeJ ( ) posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 6:06 AM

Well, it can be created in any program, really. Just some sort of a logo, a small graphic of some sort, which the winners can use on their personal sites by the picture, if they'd like to. I guess it would be best if it was small both in physical size, as well as file size. GIF or jpeg, obviously, and non-animated. I'll type up a new announcement for it soon and put a link to it in the announcements box at the top, and we'll all then use that thread for submissions.

aspirantnemo ( ) posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 6:22 AM

Well, this is my very first month of dabbling with VUE, yet im already having fun cooking a "Getting Primitive" image for the current challenge, so i guess that you can count me in too! ;-) I also like your suggestion, Mike, of a "twin" VC with related artistic and technical theme (ex: artistic:beach // how to:foam). Herv aka Aspirant No.

MikeJ ( ) posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 6:32 AM

Hi Herv'e, and welcome to Vue! I'm glad you're giving the Primitive challenge a go, and that you like the new challenge idea. But that wsa actually Varian's idea for having two. I was just trying to think up ways to make it all more interesting, and I think this will be the way to go. :) -Mike

SAMS3D ( ) posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 7:05 AM

Okay, so what is the challenge going to be and when can we start? I am so anxious. Although I know where I am in Vue, so winning, well lets just say, I am not in the dark about my position. That is okay, I love challenges. Sharen

MikeJ ( ) posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 7:19 AM

Hi Sharen Well, we need to alow the Primitive challenge for this month to run it's course, and then in August will be a new challenge. This way, we'll have time to complete the mini challenge for this month, which is to design a winners' logo. Then, whoever's logo hets voted as winning, that person gets to name the August challenge, and so on...

SAMS3D ( ) posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 7:54 AM

Logo, what kind of logo, a winner's logo? I am a little dense, what do you mean? And can we use props or just with the use of Vue? Sharen PS: when you are done, where do you post it?

MikeJ ( ) posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 8:37 AM

Hi Sharen, Right now I'm seeking out details such as that, more like, average image/file sizes, etc. As soon as I have it, I'll be starting a new thread about it, and placing the rules/guidelines in that ne thread, and I'll put a link to it in the Announcements box at the top of this page. That will be the thread to place the submissions in, and after it's run it's course, I'll start a voting thread. Won't be too long, at least by the end of the day I'll have it set up. :)
