Subject: 16-bit TIFF GC2 export to VUE Sci-Fi

cmcgaugh ( ) posted Sat, 13 June 2009 at 12:04 AM · edited Sun, 05 January 2025 at 9:25 AM

Hi,

I'm very new to VUE and am trying to import a .tif from GeoControl2 to VUE Sci-Fi.

I created a procedural terrain, opened the Terrain Editor, but don't see how to import
the image (searched Help) and this forum.

Could someone please give me a clue?  Also would appreciate any advice on how to get the
best detail from an imported terrain.

Thanks!
=)

In the terrain editor, click the "proc" tab, then right click the preview sphere. Now you're in the function editor. Click the 8th icon (from bottom) on the left toolbar. Now click the little arrow under the black preview, and browse to your tiff image. Delete the original fractal function for the altitude production, and connect the altitude output to the tiff. You'll need to chooose "bicubic interpolation" for the image to avoid artifacts, and mapping mode set to "flat (vertical)", both these options are found next to the image preview.

Thanks for the great help!

I was able to import the GC2 terrain going by your instructions.

I used the Add Texture Map Node (#7 from the bottom in VUE Pioneer),  and used
the Projected Texture Map to get the Mapping Mode, and Interpolation option.

Here is the original terrain in GC2

and rendered in VUE

I don't know why the terrain looks so different in VUE , but Rainer at the Cornucopia forum
gave me a link to a very good tutorial on exporting from GC2 to VUE,  and I hope it will
explain the discrepancy.

But I'm very happy so far with both GC2 & VUE.  I hope to use GC2 with Carrara, Bryce, and
C4D as well. But GC2/VUE may be the best combo.

If you haven't done so already, click the "zero edges" button in the terrain editor to turn it off for your terrain. Then it won't slope down on the edges (that's probably why it looks different).

Yes, thanks! Zero Edges worked!

Here's the result
