Here is a great Free Opensource Alternative.
It can generate AVI and SWF.
you can do Full Screen or partial.

In regards to CamStudio, for vids other than your own site use the .AVI. SWF is primarily for when you're hosting the file on your own site and making use of embedding.
But before you go to upload or email that .avi, those screen recording files get huge (at least I know they do with CamStudio), so running through some additional compression after the recording is done isn't a bad idea. So if you haven't considered them yet, don't forget to throw VirtualDub (a handy piece of editing software) and the Xvid codec on your list of things to download. I've achieved nice enough results with that duo, and it seems pretty YouTube compatible. (And if you need further explanation on compression via Virtualdub, there's already tuts on YouTube. They explain better than I can.)
You'd be surprised what Xvid and MP3 compression can do to a video's file size if it's a few minutes long. Chopping off the useless bits of video at the beginning from setting up the screen recording also helps a little too.
Ok, now you can get back to making your video tuts. Carry on!

It is a sceen capture app that records everything that goes on within the screen. Handy for anyone that might like to create a tutorial. Output in .AVI and .EXE.
