.sit is an aladdin systems compressed file. Mainly used for Mac's however, there is a windows version of it, and it can expand .sit files for use in windows. The expander is a free download :)

.sit stands fof Stuffit file

And it's too bad that it isn't more wide spread. It tends to compress tighter than .zip. It's useful to have UnStuffit, anyway-- particularly at the price (free). - JimX

WinACE 2.0 seems to compress a little better. So does WinRAR plus you can create self extracting archives so the user doesn't need the program. Recovery records help prevent damage to the archive. I don't know if StuffIt has these features.

**plus you can create self extracting archives so the user doesn't need the program.**And if the user has a Mac?

I don't know if StuffIt has these features.

Stuffit may create self-extracting archives for Mac or for Windows. But if both Mac and Windows users might be receiving them, polite Mac users do not use that feature... Actually, the free decoder will uncompress these even if they are in self-extracting form for the wrong platform.

Does WinACE or WinRAR have Mac versions?

WinRAR has a beta version foe MAC. They also have standard versions for Linux & Unix. I couldn't find anything on the WinACE page for MAC.
