Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 07 12:47 pm)
It is likely that the document window has been moved out of viewable area. Try Edit -> General Preferences -> Document -> Launch to Factory State, hit OK, and stop/start Poser and see if that works. If not you can try removing some of the window configuration .xml files but usually this will do the trick.
Oh wait, this is with a saved document and not ALL documents? Then the above suggestion will not work, give me a minute to figure that out.
Try Window -> Document Window Size and make the dimensions very large (1000x1000) and see if that makes the window visible.
edit: neato, I found a new way to make Poser barf - if document window size is set to 0 by 0, and then you try to Window -> Document Window Size again, Poser hangs.
Thanks for answering. I created a bunch of characters yesterday. I saved them, and created a new one each one from scratch. So I had to load V4, add her morphs etc. I added IBL lights and rendered each one to make sure everything looked ok. Saved the file and went on to the next one.
Today, I can't open any of the files I created. When I select open, the Poser doc window disappears and along with it the little window that pops up when you double click on something [name escapes me right now] I'm left looking at dots, lighting bar, and the bars for the editing tools and doc style. Nothing else. The cursor whirls around for a second or two and then changes to a single white arrow. Nothing but a shadow 2 edge box sits on the screen. The light bar didn't change to the IBL lights but there is something there as it asks me if I want to save when I select close.
I wonder if this is a Vista issue again. But I still think it has something to do with V4 morphs for either creatures or muscles. Because I can open older files I made a few days ago and did not use those morphs. But I don't think I used the morphs when I created an Alice unless her morphs use those?
Edit: I just tried to "import" the file that won't open. Poser works and works and then nothing shows up when it's done. The same thing happens when I save a file to a external drive too.
I'm using Poser6 on a Vista 64 bit home premium. I had tried to use DAZ Studio and that failed flat. Wondering if it corrupted my Poser Runtime during a import session to it? If I have to reinstall Poser again, for like the 10th time I think I'm going to check myself in at the funny farm.
If you have Use External Binary Morph Targets turned on, try turning it off and stop/start Poser, and then try to open the scene. If this was the problem (it has been for me, more than once) then the dial values on the V4 MAY be recoverable, but probably not.
Turning off the "Use external binary morph targets" option only affects what happens when you save files.
To allow a broken scene to load, you need to rename or delete the associated PMD file.
Once the scene is loaded you can (as mentioned above) save materials and dial settings for reapplying to either a replacement figure or after reINJection of the morphs.
Well that's a step actually, you can open the saved scene file in an editor and look for this string: "screenPlace" and check the two numbers after it, make sure they are each greater than zero AND less than your screen resolution; also check the "dimensions" value right above that and make sure each of its values are greater than zero (that's the size of the doc window x by y).
ok, i got one open. 1/4 of it I can read. Then the last 3/4 of it is nothing but a bunch of symbols and stuff. Nothing legible. Looking at it closely there are quite a few symbols scattered through it and it gets worse as you go down. Nothing reads clearly. I'm using Notepad to look at the file. Did a search for screenPlace and nothing came up.
This is what most of the file looks like
7ç¹°èô:dÖ¯9™l 7è¹½@“
If the file is named *.pz2 then it really ought to be plain text. Special characters all through it means it's either corrupted (and lost) or the file is in binary format (which Poser doesn't write except for .PMD files). Unless someone else has some suggestions I think you are not going to be able to recover those files, maybe you can get some help from Smith Micro tech support.
Okie dokie, thanks for the help. :)
I was looking at the PMD file. I am starting to think thats corrupted. I think it might have had something to do with when I tried DAZ studio3 and you could import your runtime folder and it's possible that something happened there. So I might need to reinstall everything or just the core figures.
I did a test, took V4 out on her own saved her and then did the same with another V4, loaded her up with the usual morphs I've used before and not had problems but I couldn't even get the basic V4 to load in after I closed the program and opened it again. Seems like what I have is getting worse, so it is starting to sound like I'm going to need to uninstall Poser....again...and start from scratch. bangs head on table a few times By installing and uninstalling several times does that have anything to do with this? I'm half tempted to see if my other computer can load in the saved files. Or would that start something on that one?
I was so excited to finally get a new computer...now I'm ready to punt kick it out the front door.
Oh no, the PMD file is binary and not editable (as far as I know). Look at the PZ2 file and perhaps you can get the dial spin values out. Reinstalling will not help you there.
Well that was the last thing I had to suggest ^^ If you've spent as much time trying to repair this than you did putting it together in the first place, it might be time to just start over with a fresh file. IMO you may want to leave "Use External Binary Morph Targets" disabled in the future (I don't use it any more myself because of just this kind of problem).

I checked thru the threads and didn't see much that resembles what I have. I've created in Poser and saved the file. But when I try to open the file, the Poser doc window disappears. The cursor whirls for amoment like it's opening it and then quickly changes to the pointy cursor but nothing is on my screen. When I select "new" it asks if I want to save my file. I select no. This seems to happen when I've loaded like either the Creature morphs or the Muscle morphs for V4. I decided since I was making quite a few characters, that I would create a base model with the morphs loaded so I didn't have to keep going back and INT each morph etc. This worked wonders on my last PC but on this one, Vista machine, I'm getting that missing working Poser window.
Are there too many morphs loaded for it to function? Just doing it's usual Poser puke since it can't be bothered to carry on opening the file?
The other threads mention changing the preferences. I already have that done. This situation has to do with opening a file already created but Poser isn't showing me anything.
