Oh yes! His first hit single away from the Jackson 5.  Great song. It was huge, but who would have imagined that he would have had such mega huge hits to come!

He was a true entertainer. He had it all.  Looks, ability to sing unmixed, the moves, the writing talent,  stage presence and the drive to succeed.

"In early 1996, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) issued a press release charging Jackson with antisemitism regarding lyrics in the song "They Don't Care About Us", the fourth single from HIStory.[102] The song had originally been recorded with lyrics that included the phrase "Jew me, sue me", and "Kick me, kike me". The ADL complained and Jackson responded by saying he would re-record the lyrics before the album went into production. However the ADL's press release charged that Jackson had performed the song live and included the lyrics in question during the live performance.[102] The dispute over the lyrics upset long-time Jackson friend Steven Spielberg, who considered the song anti-semitic.[103]"

sigh

The only people who don't make mistakes in their lives are those who don't live long enough to make any.  I'm not saying we should forget those mistakes, but do we have to celebrate them and vilify him even more?  The man is dead, there are people who wish to mourn him.

If you can't respect that, I just ask that you respect those who wish to do so.  I hope that's not too difficult.

Stating a contrary view should not be conflated with wishing to silence others.  Perhaps David added a bit of balance.  He certainly based his concern on facts.

Quote - ...The song had originally been recorded with lyrics that included the phrase "Jew me, sue me", and "Kick me, kike me".

Now, I'm not responding to this with the intent of starting trouble. http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/art/emoticons/sad.gif It's just that... I understand where David is coming from. I remember when that controversy erupted; as a lifelong Michael Jackson fan, I was confused and appalled when the media brought attention to those words.

But later, I read a response Michael gave to a reporter regarding the intent of those lyrics. The meaning he said he was trying to portray fell in line with everything he 'preached', so to speak:

Quote - Mr. Jackson gave a statement to The New York Times this afternoon...
The idea that these lyrics could be deemed objectionable is extremely hurtful to me, and misleading. The song in fact is about the pain of prejudice and hate and is a way to draw attention to social and political problems. I am the voice of the accused and the attacked. I am the voice of everyone. I am the skinhead, I am the Jew, I am the black man, I am the white man. I am not the one who was attacking. It is about the injustices to young people and how the system can wrongfully accuse them. I am angry and outraged that I could be so misinterpreted.

As an artist and songwriter, after I read that, it made perfect sense to me. Sometimes the singer takes on a "roll", much as an actor does. Especially because of Michael's own explanation, this rings a very true bell with me. Anybody ever heard John Lennon's song "Woman is the Nig*er of the World"? It's the same thing, you know... Using a well known epithet to speak out against the treatment of a specific group of people. As a minority of mixed racial background, AND a woman -- I love that song. http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/art/emoticons/biggrin.gif

AnyHOO, I felt the need to address this because.... well, I really did empathize with David. One of the most awful things we can experience as human beings is when we feel we, or those we love, have been attacked (I'm referring to how David considered the lyrics, not to forum responses) -- yet others seem to turn a blind eye to it or brush it away. I ought to know; I've experienced similar things my entire life.

That having been said, I'm very grateful for this thread.
I grew up loving Michael Jackson's songs, dancing, artistry in general...
My younger years flashed before my eyes when I heard about his passing. May his family and loved ones be comforted.

God bless!

**The entire purpose of my post was to point out the GOOD message in the song that Michael personally said he was trying to portray. ** I did that to try to help assuage the bad feelings that arose due to misunderstandings over those lyrics.

um jew me is a common saying now, so I would not say it is antisemitism, and I hear jews in my brother in laws family  who are jewish, say it often as itiom type phrase when they feel someone is cheated them or they got a good deal and jewed the merchant down on a good deal.

If I go buy somethng from someone like a car dealer, and I work him down in price I might say I jewed him down.

If someone cheats me out of alot of money I might say I got jewed, Now this is not really harming jews and jews are the ones who made up that slogan and use it more then anyone else according to my brother in law and his family.

And it's not really racist when the term simply means to cheat someone or to be cheated, Jews may get angry about it because they are often accused of hording money and being cheap and cheating others, which is not true either.

The term was ment in that song as a protest from Micheal Jackson about how he was sued for nothing other then spending some time with a kid as a celebrity at his neverland ranch,  then to get rich the kids family cooked up some scheme to cheat him out of several million dollars, It is obvious that the whole thing was a set up on Micheal Jackson who is basically a kid him self at heart and has done a shit load of humanitarian work and donations, and was never accused of such things in his early years ever.

when he said kick me kick me jew me he ment the systems actions toward him in court and the family of that child that lied and and coached thier kid to lie in court to get money out of him even if it ment tarnishing Michael's reputation and leading people to think he was a child molester.

Yes Micheal Jackson is strange in a bat man joker kind of way in the way he presents himself with all his run away surgical procedures and heavy makeup he wears, and he lived a very sheltered life and had people making schedules for him his whole life where to be what to wear, waht to say, waht to sing, how he was to dance, what to eat, when to sleep ect ect ect.
He really had no life of his own or freedom, So it is not hard to see why he may have wanted to invite some guests over to never land ranch.

And it's not that odd or strange for a celebrity to invite kids over, sports celebrity's do it all the time, they go to functions or even create functions for kids.

I'm with Janet Jackson on this one, Not only do I believe MJ is inocent, I also believe he is not an anti jew biggot or racist.

Micheal Jackson was a hard worker, a humanitarian and a very meek mild mannered and gental man, with the heart of a child.

So get over it DPhoadly

pisses me off that a person spends the're whole life doing something for others and a few mis understood lyrics or a childs crook family is all it takes to ruin peoples trust and repect for that person.

In the back of thier minds just because Michael is a little feminine in appearance because he wears eye liner and lip stick and is soft spoken they think he's gay not to mention he's a father and has kids of his own.

Do not judge lest ye be judged, Last time I heard that is in the old testiment, I find it two faced that the jewish community was offended over something like useing the words jew me when they say it every day as a common jewish saying.

And how the hell they thought that song was aimed as an isult at them is amazeing when it was a simply a protestive song by MJ about the courts and the plaintiff who sued him.
but setteled out of court for a lesser amount.

Yeah they were willing to settle out of court to get a lesser amount what does that tell you?
and Michael was aquitted no charges, Last time I looked that means the man was found inocent.

Michael Jackson's image was sevearly misunderstood as well, one of the reasons people misunderstood him and did not get him.

One of the things people need to understand that in show biz, it's all smoke and mirrors, nothings real,, everyone wants to have thier own unique image, Michael was no different, cultivating a king tut look that turned more toward a joker look as the surgical complication set in from mutiple surgical procedures.

He was known as the king of pop and cultivated an image to live up to that even though it got a little bazzar as time went by,  he incorporated his plastic surgeries to reflect that image, but I think he went a little to far with it and had some surgical procedure complications that complicated the king tut image he was aiming for as the king of pop GET IT?, anyone who does not understand why Michael looked the way he did, did not have a clue to what his cultivated look was about or what kind of look he was really aiming for, so he decided to just look bazzar after that due to the surgical complications. not unlike Ozzy Ozborn., whome also wears lips stick, stange clothes, makeup and eyeliner and no one accuses him of being gay.

I agree with you.

I think why people attack MJ because of his way of looking was because he never defend his self so much.
These kind of people are always targets for others who think they have the right to hurt somebody, who looks different.
Look at the Stones.
I think they are more Freaks than Michael ever was. But People would never say this about Jagger and co.
Why? Maybe because Jagger and co would show this people the right direction.

I never care who a Artist looks. For me always just his artwork count.
I am 45, almost in the same age like MJ was. He was a part of my live, with his music, Performance, Even when i was not a Typical MJ fan, i always respect him for his Music and not the way he was looking.

I think he tortured his body to make his soulpain more less. :((

Love him or hate him, he helped define a generation, and for that ALONE he should be given some respect.  No one knows exactly what happened with the allegations against him, except that the boys father saw a quick way to make alot of money and jumped all over it.  After the settlement, it seemed to me that the case sure was dropped in a hurry...hard to do for a parent who just had their child victimized by someone.

I'm not saying the man is innocent or guilty, but for people to go around calling him a pedophile simply because he looks and acts weird is absurd.  I personally think he had more issues with regression coming from an intense sense of rejection that he felt all his life.  He certainly began to dissociate from reality later in life and many people took advantage of that.  Whatever you may THINK, his music is his best legacy and people should just leave it at that.

Yeah well I never saw MJ going around screeming profanity or putting lyrics in his music like I am anti semetist today in his lyrics, I'm willing to give the guy a break compared to some of the other artists I have heard who never got slammed over thier music.

jewish community knew what it really ment and tried to accuse him of antisemitism because thay could not get him on anything else, what is worse?  that he made a song with poor judgement on one single word?  and made a simple mistake?

or the jewish community knowing he was just useing the term to describe being taken for a ride in court by the plaintiff yet they cooked up antisemitism charges to try to strong arm MJ.
to get waht they could out of Michael as well?

Music has a rating system that has been in effect for awhile now, that was put into action since snoop dog wrote cop killer and pissed off every cop and elected official around the country, But the song is just a work of art,  No one is forceing you to listen to that artists work, you are not being chained down and having head phones glued to your ears.

this is a free speech country, if you don't like it go live in Russia,  Iran, China or  North Korea , where you will be more comfortable.

What really amazes me, they had alot of nerve considering in thier own country of Isael they can bulldoze your house for slight infractions of the law and it does not even have to be the owner of th house who commits a misdeamenar or a crime, it can be the home owners son or daughter who do something that gets the house bulldozed to the ground.

before jews start pokeing fingers at Michael Jackson maybe they need to stop poking fingers at palistinians, make peace and stop bulldozeing houses as a form of police state punishment.

I think they need to clean up thier back-yard before they start pokeing thier noses in Michael's business.

peace

I'm done with this subject, the nerve some people have to point fingers.

Rest in Peace Michael Jackson

I agree with you.
I grow up in Germany,no, i am not German at all, my Parents was Italien, but you can not imagine how many times in my live i heard the word in germany "You are a antisemit" :(
For harmless words.
The jewish community is very generous with this word. :(

Yes, Rest in peace Michael.
