Subject: Converting 2D to 3D for use in Poser

SDG ( ) posted Wed, 01 July 2009 at 2:49 AM · edited Fri, 07 February 2025 at 4:18 PM

We develop multimedia stories, using Poser, Paint shop pro and flash.  The characters in poser, except Staci character, are all realistic human.  The demand has lately been for "comic" figures such as the Archie character in the comics by the same name.  There are plenty such figures available in 2D, or one can even draw your own.  But mostly, they are not posed as you want them to be and you need to have a 3D figure that can be sent to Poser and then take it from there.
So, I need a program that will convert these 2d cartoon figures to 3D.  I had a look at Canoma, Photomodeler and TurboCad, but they seem to focus on architectures and such.
Where can I find such a program?  Preferably avalable for try-out before I spend money.

Sincerely,

Johan Opperman

I'm pretty sure that such a program doesn't exist.

I'm also pretty sure that it's do-able in a low cost / free 3D program (e.g. blender) but would require a lot of work.

The Poser figures closest to what you seek possibly are AikoToon and Hiro Toon at DAZ. They are head replacement figures for Aiko 3 and Hiro 3. I used to use Shazam for such commercial work... it was a toon version of V2 that had a male morph. You could also check out the free Poser 4 figure varients by pitklad... they have scaling features that permit creating bauble head type toons. There was an overly exxpensive product at Animotions that was called Super Derformer or something like that which was a magnet system for turning Poser Millenium 3 figures into toons. I believe that in the "morph form" section of the Body control for V4 and M4 are dials for tooning the figures heads, hands and feet. Maybe you could use V4 The GIRL or G4 or whatever it is called to make both toon men and girls... I don't know. I recomend the AikoToon and HiroToon for an "Archies" look though... not as bauble headed as other toons but still very toon. Someone made character morph sets for them... the only trouble is not much texture support but maybe you want "plastic skin" anyway.

Thanks both of you!

I might be wrong, but it almost sounds like something along the lines of Anime Studio might be a better solution .... it's designed to animate 2D pictures. You can import 3D figures into it, or even render a 2D image at the angle you need and animate that.

The Make 3D thing looks awesome. But it doesn't say that it could export the models at least into an OBJ file.

Passion is anger and love combined. So if it looks angry, give it some love!
