Subject: images opened in PS7 are darker than when opened with other programs

Hi all, 

I use Paint Shop Pro XI for most of my image editing but when I am finished with the image, I use Adobe Photoshop 7 to change image size and to save the image for the web before posting.

I have always noticed a difference in brightness/contrast  of an image when it is opened in Photoshop 7 than when it is opened with another editing or viewing program.  The image is darker when viewed in Photoshop 7.  Lately, the difference has become drastic.  This difference is not in the image data because if I save it and then open it with PS Pro XI or "windows picture and fax viewer", it  is not dark.

I cannot find a way to adjust this difference.  If I  use the level adjusts option from the toolbar, the image data can be changed and can be set to a brighter level but then when saved and opened with another program, it is too bright.

I need some guidance on how to adjust the default levels of image displays in the Photoshop workspace.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think I found the problem.

Since the problem just occurred recently , I decided to see what auto updates had recently been installed. I found one for my monitor, lol.

I them went to control panel and used the Adobe Gamma calibration tool. This seemed to have fixed the problem.

So no need for assistance. Thanks anyway.

 what is your default working space in PS?

RGB (sRGB IEC61966-2.1) ??    Apple RGB?? Apple RGB (1998) ??

you can also look into GAMMA settings...   windows uses a 2,2 gamma setting and mac uses a 1.8 so colors appear darker on widows than they do on a mac. you may be running into a similar issue between programs...  

hope it's a poke in the right direction..

You were spot on with your advice, even if a bit late, lol.  I use windows XP.  My Adobe workspace color setting  is sRGB IEC61966-2.1 and my Gray Gamma is 2.2,  just as you indicated.
