It's free because Corel is up to PSP Ultimate version X2 and is likely to release the newest version soon. If you have or get PSP 10 you can upgrade to Ultimate X2 for $49.00 USD.

There's a really nice PSP forum here at R'osity too, and the people in there are quite friendly. The forum doesn't get a lot of action, but if you have any questions, you'll almost always find helpful advice there.

There's buckets of tutorials on the web for PSP, too, and although most of them are for older versions, they're for the most part pretty easy to translate to version 10.

PSP stands for Paint Shop Pro, which used to ba made by a company called Jasc. Painter was a Corel product already when they bought PSP several years ago.

The two products have a lot of similarities. Corel has continued to market Painter as product for creating new art, and they now market PSP as a product for photo manipulation. That aside, I think PSP is a very capable product for any painting project you might want to do, and it can really do almost everything Photoshop can (including scripting, yay!) and at a much cheaper price (even at its normal rate).

😄

I'm not sure if it runs on a Mac; I've only every used it on windows. The system requirements at the Corel web site don't list any Mac OS, so you should check with them, I think.

Probably because it's a few versions back Sharen ;o). A lot of companies are doing that now, hoping you'll like it so much you'll upgrade to the current version. It's actually a very good marketing tactic :o). I'm still waiting for e-on to give away Vue 5 or 6 for free...LOLOL. I'm not holding my breath or anything ;o).

I have been using Paint shop Pro since the Jasc days and right now I use version 10. It's a good program and does many things that Photoshop does but there are exceptions. Yes, there is a great paint shop pro forum right here are rendo.

I got CorelDraw X4 and loved it as much as I had back when it was in version 4 to 11.  I have tried the trial version of PSP when it was in Jasc.

Thanks for the info LaurieA

Yes, CorelDraw is vector based where PSP is pixel based. Like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

True, but it's always been bundled with Photopaint which is, hands down, my favorite pixel paint program.

Well, I was only clarifying because someone mentioned CorelDraw as if it were a substitute for PSP, which it's not ;o).

I used Photopaint way back when and personally couldn't stand it...LOL. However, I'm perfectly comfy in Photoshop.

Everyone has their own favorites :o).

Jack, I think part of the reason there aren't that many tuts for X is because after corel bought it, the newer versions were little more than slight upgrades to the older versions.

Whoa! This is too good to be true... or to pass up! I have PSP8, and couldn't scrape together the money or excuses to upgrade. There are some things that are so much easier in PSP than in PS Elements, so it's always been an essential tool.

Thanks for posting this where more people see it!

Hello Laurie, I am pleased to meet you and I hope we will become friends. My problem is I really have nothing to contribute to the forum in the way of helping anyone learn any of the programs that I have seen discussed here. I am a friend of Paul Schacht. I have know him for about 10 years thorough our association with The Sitefights Web Site Competition. He is one of my  Team leaders and a very close friend to me and he has been there to help me with things like graphics and web pages I needed done. He is the one that told me about the psp 10 download.

Hi,
thanks for the heads-up!  I got it, and installed it. Installation works fine, but when I try
to launch it, it just silently dies (no error message or popup).

Using XP64, latest service pack, 4 Gigs of RAM. Has anyone similar problems?

Best regards,
  Michael

LaurieA ( ) posted Sat, 18 July 2009 at 6:06 AM

It may be a 32 bit program. Since I have a 32 bit system, I'm not sure how that works. It's just a thought.

to fix (from the same site as above)

Of course, in order to keep applications such as Corel Photo Shop Pro continue running without error, the complete removal instructions cannot be followed. Use the following workaround instead:

  1. Open Services (services.msc) in Control Panel’s Administrators Tools.
  2. Locate ProtexisLicensing or Protexis Licensing service. If you are seeing Protexis Licensing V2 service, use the next guide. Stop the service and then set the Startup Type to Disabled.
  3. Bowse to %SystemDrive%WindowsSystem32 folder.
  4. Copy original PSIKey.dll to program folder of application that relies on Protexis, e.g. %SystemDrive%Program FilesCorelCorel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI.
  5. Rename PsiClient.dll to PsiClient.bak, or simply delete it.
  6. Rename PSIKey.dll to PsiClient.dll
  7. Rename PSIService.exe to PSIService.bak, or simply delete it.

If the Protexis DRM softare installed on your system is of version 2, follow these steps instead:

  1. Open Services (services.msc) in Control Panel’s Administrators Tools.
  2. Locate Protexis Licensing V2 service. Stop the service and then set the Startup Type to Disabled.
  3. Bowse to %SystemDrive%Program FilesCommon FilesProtexisLicense Service folder.
  4. Copy original PSIKey_2.dll to program folder of application that relies on Protexis, e.g. %SystemDrive%Program FilesCorelCorel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2.
  5. Rename PsiClient.dll to PsiClient.bak, or simply delete it.
  6. Rename PSIKey_2.dll to PsiClient.dll
  7. Rename PSIService_2.exe to PSIService_2.bak, or simply delete it.

Now, Protexis Licensing Service is tamed and disabled properly so that PSIService no longer run in background, without affecting functionality of installed application.
