Subject: Site search problems?

IsaoShi ( ) posted Sat, 30 May 2009 at 6:44 AM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 7:59 PM

I thought I would bring this to your attention, as I seem to waste so much time searching for specific products by their actual name, and not finding them. Often I just give up.

I've just used the site search to look for "Hikari", the name of a hair product by Studio11. Result: nothing found.

Then I did a site search for "Studio11". Result: no Members found.

Then I did an advanced search looking in each specific area for those things. Again, not found.

Finally in frustration I Googled "Hikari Hair" and the first link took me straight to the RMP Product page!

I think your site search facility may need an overhaul...

I think you'd be better off using the marketplace search when looking for products instead of using the site search...  Also if you look for products by a specific vendor, there's the drop down menu at the top of the store with a list of all the vendors.

You're so right, Lucie, thanks. I'll use that in future for store products.

I just found out there is a beta Member search facility as well. I'll be using that, too.

No problem... you have gathered that I meant the top-right site search box that's on every page.

It's really convenient to have it there, as you can do a quick search in all areas of the site (Forums, Products, Members, Articles, etc.) directly from whatever page you're on.

But it's not so useful if it can't find things like products or members even when you type in the exact name! :O)

I've been having quite a few problems with the site search, too.  For a couple of weeks now, nothing at all or nothing relevant is coming up under store products - even copying the item name and pasting in a new search tab.  For example, a search for "SMS Hair" yields the right result in the Marketplace search, but not in the default display on the site search (or the first couple of pages of the 295 keyword results).  Experimenting, "Dead Poses" to searching for "V4 & M4 Dead Poses" brings it up OK in the MP search, but nothing useful in the Site Search (and "V4 & M4 Dead Poses" brings up a different, but equally useless result).    I haven't noticed similar problems with the other result categories (free stuff, articles, etc.).  Searching (+ Advanced search) for "Papoo" brings up no results on Site search (and I was searching from the product page [68111]  itself); "Papoo for M4" brought up lots of results, but not that item.  I'm baffled by whatever organizing principle there is for what DOES come up. Up to a couple of weeks ago, I had no problems with this feature but currently Google is far more useful.  Could browser security have something to do with this?  I can't cut & paste directly in the forums anymore either (and get a message to that effect) and Firefox did an update 2 or 3 weeks ago.  Except for popup blockers & redirect filters, I can't see anything that would affect things here (disabling them has no effect).

Im not sure..I will point the programmers here and see if they might know why the search is acting this way.

Thanks for the heads up :)

Yeah - I'd just second the issue - searching for anything using the main site search, comes up with nothing - putting in my own user name finds no images, no users (!), nothing. Try it with a word like 'girl' or something equally generic - no image results or anything; the search function has always been terrible (as long as I can remember) I'm afraid.

Ok we have 3- 4 areas of search..the MP search is for the Marketplace..then we have a general site search that would mainly focus on the main areas of the site...like surveys, front page articles etc, then we have the member search, which is for members of course, then we have a gallery search for images...all these search functions are in their respective areas.

So if I were searching for an image, Id go to the gallery and click the search there...if I were looking for a member, Id go to the tab 'members', and scroll to the 'member search' and enter the name..a general site search at the top of the page is where I would look for anything concerning the main site like front page etc..

Does that help?

If you do all this and you're still not finding what you need, let me know so I can pass info on to the programmers :)

Thanks!

I understand the differences.  It isn't that I can't find products, but that it takes several extra steps now.  The general site search used to return content when you entered an item name ( or part thereof) , and it doesn't do so with any regularity or pattern anymore.  Just tried again: for http://market.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/index.php?ViewProduct=72240,  I tried a general site search using "Marco"  and there were no hits under store products; for " Hz Marco for M4, " (the full product title), the item does come up on general search, as the 14th on the list ; for "Hz Marco," no hits again.  No problems with the Marketplace search. The Site search used to be pretty useful, and I still usually try it, out of habit as much as anything else.  But it isn't too useful without an exact product name (and not always then).

Ahh I see. Well, they might have done something different with the basic site search since they added the new MarketPlace search feature.

I'll ask and see what I can find out :)

ah! Thanks for the explanation - I didn't realise there were different search tools for different areas - I thought 'Search Renderosity' in the top right meant exactly that.

I have also found the general site search to be remarkably off target.  Very specific searches using single-string member names, product names,  and vendor names almost never result in appropriate matches in my experience.  It either comes up with nothing or a list of seemingly random unrelated hits.  My only excuse for why I've kept trying is force of habit from using search engines that actually work.

IsaoShi ( ) posted Wed, 22 July 2009 at 8:10 AM

I think there was an undertone in project_nemesis' last post that you might have missed, Jumpstartme2. Or perhaps you just chose to ignore it?  :O)

Let me put it more plainly: Why do we have "Search Renderosity" on every web page, if it does not do exactly that? Please (Renderosity) either make it do what it says it does, or remove it.

Nope. I didn't miss it or ignore it..thats why I stated that I would check to see if something was done to the basic search feature when we made the MP search. 😉
