Subject: I can see the Buckets in my render :-(

Hi all.

I've just come across an unexpected problem in Vue 7.4 Infinity. I can actually see marks left behind on my image from the rendering buckets.

Any idea's how to get around this problem ?.

The only thing I can think if that I did different was that I rendered to the screen at 4000X3000 @ 300 DPI rather than to disk. I didn't render to disk because I find that doesn't work right all the time either when I'm pushing my systems resources. (Sony Viao 2GHz Duo, 2GB RAM, VISTA)

Rendering time was a wasted 7 hours.

PS.... I'm just trying the settings that silverblade33 posted in another thread to see if that makes a differance.

Seems the rendering times are way faster. What took 7 hours last night is going to take 1h 30min now. Guess I'll see soon enough then.

Very strange, never saw anything like this before. Anyway, it's hard to help if we don't know anything about your scene. We don't know your atmosphere settings, material settings, render settings, etc.

Note: using 300dpi is useless, it has no effect, as discussed in another recent thread. I'd suggest using the default 72dpi.

Hi Ruta

Ok I found the cause, but I don't under stand the reason why I have this problem.

I'm trying to render this image at high res.

The material used is the "Clear Water" preset, and the atmosphere is again another preset. Outside the image in the top right I have very large Chrome Cube to refelect light back into the image and from what I can see this is clearly the cause.

I can verify this by setting the material of the cube to a Mirror material the problem goes away, when I set it back to Chrome the problem comes back again.

So I know that's the cause, but the marks left behind are from the render bucket. It's not a refelection from the cube.

Any ideas ?
This problem can be seen in every render mode I've tried from Final right through to use mode.

That's really strange, James. I have no idea of what's happening. It does look like an ugly bug. I suggest that you raise a ticket at e-on and send them the file.

Your image looks very good. Like you wrote, I also have the feeling this isn't done often in 3D and so I made something, a long time ago... well, not similar but inspired by... :-)

Ok will do. Lucky enough I can use the Mirror and still get the same effect I want, so I won't have to wait for e-on to sort this out.

Does it happen at all resolutions you've tried besides 4000x3000?  Could be an issue with using 300dpi instead of 72dpi for screen rendering and Vue doesn't ratio the GI/preview pixels as it goes.

Hi Shawn.

It only happens when rendering at high resolutions, any high resolution at that. DPI settings makes no difference.

With regards to my tests with the Chrome and Mirror materials, it seems I was wrong and this did not solve the problem. All it did was shift the area where the Bucket leaves marks in the rendering. I didn't spot this until I started rendering the full image again later.

I've spent the entire day running test renders turning off / on options one by one until I found the little sucker that was causing the problem. This time I'm 100% sure I got this nailed down.

Can't tell you the exact name of the setting causing this right now as my laptop is rendering and will be for the next 8 hour. I'm on my Netbook right now.  I will post my findings tomorrow though.

All I can say right now is that it's a single option in the Atmosphere editor. I think it was on the Effects page, last option on the bottom right.

You may what to try effects light and sky instead of sky only.

Another thing I can think of is that Vue is re-calculating sub-rays instead of using what's already been calculated for the entire scene.  Also check the ray-trace bounce count/amount so they hit/reflect into the water better.  If this is an HDRI scene, increase the resolution of the HDRI image.  Blocky images can cause artifacting (assuming the artifacts are not the same size as your buckets).

You mean the default reflection map ?  You can override that on a per material basis if you want or just let the reflections do what they would naturally

That sounds like the one Frank, can't say for sure though until my Laptop is finished rendering.

From memory what I can say is that it is a drop down menu item with 3 options, and it is in the bottom right of a page. I think the effects page but from what I just said above I'm sure you can verify this exactly.

I have disabled this feature altogether and the problem went away. It's a bug for sure so I will send a report along with my files over to e-on in the morning. I'll have to leave my laptop on all night rendering.

Hi guys. Woke up this morning and my image was rendered perfectly. See attached image for the "feature" I had to switch off to get around this problem.

Very interesting... I assume that 'volumetric sunlight' was the value that solved the situation but what was the value that caused the error?

Hi Ruta.

It's when it was set to Volumetric Sunlight that I had all the Bucket marks in my image. When I set it to "No shaddows on clouds" the problem went away. Quite odd really.

I've used that setting a lot for my scenes.  But I had my camera pointed upwards.  I should try it with the camera pointed down at water to see if it happens.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, I too have the same bucket marks with volumetric sunlight, problem is I really really need to keep the atmosphere the way it is, was anyone able to work out why the buckets were showing?

Hello.

It's a bug in the software. I've reported this to e-on and they where able to reproduce the problem on their end, but they have no clue as to the cause just yet.

So there's nothing you can do about this right now but I still recommend you open a ticket and report your problem to them. Best to keep them on their toes because the last two builds have been pretty poor.
