Subject: Is there any other way to work with the Poser 8 library?

lululee ( ) posted Thu, 06 August 2009 at 6:14 AM · edited Tue, 22 October 2024 at 11:53 PM

Hi,
I truly cannot control this Poser 8 library. If i can find a folder in that little tiny text then I can't get folders to stay open. I finally found the refresh button, (why do we have to manually refresh anyway, the other libraries refreshed when you poked them.)
Is there any other software that is currently available to access the library ?

Wait a few days.  Bagginsbill has hinted that a major bugfix is coming very shortly,
which may smooth out some of those problems.

The refresh is needed because the interface uses the Internet Explorer cache to
store thousands of little XML files.  Seems to me like a dubious process, but nobody
asked me.

Huh? So if someone cleared his or her IE cache - or has it set to do so on closure.. you'd end up with an empty Poser library? Until it's refreshed at least?

I do hope there is an alternative to all of these drop down menus (or whatever their proper name is).    If you have folders that go deep it is a nightmare to select them plus they go off of the visible area. It is extremely frustrating to navigate and I don't want to redo my entire runtime folders.   I realize that this is a new interface and I could be doing things incorrectly so if I am, I would be glad to know the correct way. cheerio lululee

Currently all other library browsers suffer from the defective socket.py in Poser 8 and thus cannot load content via PRPC. I haven't checked if you can just use Poser 7's version yet, just played a bit with making PRPC integrate into Poser.

You can use the "drop box" Python script provided by D3D though to drag and drop files onto it and have poser load the files... So Window's explorer will work, but that's not my idea of loading content ,-)

Rats. Is this something that they are intending on fixing soon?

My PX - Poser eXplorer has just been updated to work with Poser 8, and I just released XL - eXtended Library, a new library system for Poser 8.

OMG! But, but, but....its Windows only! Do you have any idea when the Mac version will be done?

Dimension3D ( ) posted Thu, 06 August 2009 at 7:44 PM

Well, Mac version depends on ... I have no Mac, so it's always a bit difficult to say when and whether I can do it. If everythings works fine on Mac without changes, it's OK, but otherwise it gets complicated.

Oh my goodness....so that's what the problem is.   I would never have thought of the IE browser clearing as being the reason.   I thought it was perhaps a firewall issue.   That explains why I briefly saw the Library content upon installation, and then it just disappeared.    Well, it's encouraging to know they are at least working on it.   Until then, I'm just loading content in Poser Pro, saving as a scene, then opening the scene in Poser 8 to tweak.    Dimension3D, your eXplorer looks interesting.

i think the new library looks pretty spartan, like its alpha stage just for holding place until the real one with the nice fonts and borders comes about. Poser 7 back had class at least, even though a lot of people did not like the UI.

At least I've reported it, but it looks like it's running on Windows Vista, so it's just not working on XP and 2000 I guess...

I installed a quick browse python from D3D that I had in Poser Pro and was able to load a light set from Poser 8 into my studio. It's a temporary substitute for the Library that's supposed to be in Poser 8. I hope sincerely that my problem with the Library Palette gets solved soon. I am sooooo trying not to be frustrated by this issue.

Dimension3D, your XL-Extended Library looks very interesting and I consider purchasing it. Especially for the nice built-in scripts. However, I'm a bit concerned about the loading speed of your library. As we now have the very fast flex tree library, how fast (scanning, loading all the thumbnails, etc.) is your library variant when using a huge single poser library? Any further info for me?

Dimension3D ( ) posted Fri, 07 August 2009 at 8:19 AM

The XL library is pretty fast. Unlike flex or the old Poser library, it only scans that part of the file system, that is about to be displayed. (The old Poser library was also not too slow, if you turned off building the folder menu.) Even for large folders with many items, it usually takes less than a second to expand the next folder level. (There's an option to make this faster by not testing for sub-folders before you actually access them, then it's almost immediately.)

Loading thumbnails is also fast. For larger folders it may take a small moment, but in most cases it's less time than you need to move the mouse from the folder tree to the file list.

Dimension3D, thanks for the info. Sounds pretty good.

Looks like PRPC isn't really needed anymore to load content. Advanced Library now uses the same way Poser's library does ;-)
