Ok  I have just tested Poser's new improved rendering capabilities on old 3D content that came about when Poser 4 and Poser 5 were the new talk around town.  I have also written an honest review about about and backed it up with a recent Poser 8 render comparing old 3D content with new 3D content. 

The new review dives deeper into Poser 8's new content management system so you can see it at work and explains the "No Preview Guy" that you'll get when installing some of the old 3D content. You can read more about  it at Poser By Design as well as view a few screen shots.

This week we'll be pushing the software to the limits as far as rendering goes, and hopefully in the future we'll be able to pull off a really nice Poser animation that makes use of all of the Poser features. I've read the poser 8 review, good stuff, very helpful. One question though.....

Sounds great, but it's pretty much worthless without giving the render times on Poser 7 or Poser Pro. If something renders in 10 minutes on Poser 8, how long did that same scene take on Poser 7? 11 minutes? 12 minutes? 20 minutes? 60 minutes?

Secondly what did you render? One figure? One Prop? A complete figure with clothes, textures and hair? A complete scenes with figures, props and background?

I'd love to know to be able to really judge if Poser 8 is that much faster in rendering compared to Poser 7 or Poser Pro.

That flashing GIF on the upper left corner that says "Special August Update" has got to be the most annoying GIF I've seen in a long time though. You're gonna give someone a seizure. ;-)

At the moment we are working on a chart for rendering times based on a computer operating with 512MB RAM and 2.5GHz.  and a computer that has 2.8 GHZ with 2.5GB RAM.  The chart will have render times plus the number of 3D models used in the rendering.  We are also going to try our best to stuff our scenes with as many 3D props as possible to get a better feel of the rendering capabilities on a system that has 2.5GB RAM.  The new charts will provide you with more detailed information and we hope to have the chart completed by Sunday August 7, 2009. The first time I render with Poser 8 on the 2.5GB RAM computer, I got up expecting that it would take about 15 mintues to render. It finished the render in about a minute or less. Then I got really excited.  We are really running Poser through every thing we can think of and it will just take some time to get all of the information which is why we'll be reviewing Poser 8 for 2 weeks.

If you have a multi core machine, on average it will be many times faster.  Not so much because the renderer is awesome, but because Poser 7's multiprocessing scheme was dumb.  In version 8 it's smart.  It can't be boiled down to "10% faster" or any specific number, because this depends heavily on composition of the scene - e.g. if you render large pictures of a single polygon, it won't matter - but with ordinary amounts of stuff in your scene, on average it will be many times faster with a multi core computer.
