Poser 8 crashes when going to material room, everytime.

Anyone have this problem and then fix it?

Zanzo ( ) posted Fri, 14 August 2009 at 9:25 AM

UPDATE:

It has to do with using poser files saved in poser pro.

I open up a project with poser 8 that I originally made with poser pro. Then go to material room and crash.

I've been sending in reports on that problem. The workaround I found, albeit a clunky one, is instead of hitting the material room tab, select a light and in the properties hit advanced settings. This should take you into the material room, bypassing the room tab. Once there, you should be fine, but if you leave the material room, you'll have to use that method again to get back. They REALLY need to get that fixed. -Les

Thanks for the tip Les. This bug has nothing to do with scenes saved in PoserPro because it happend to me to multiple scenes that I started in P8.

sixus1 ( ) posted Fri, 14 August 2009 at 11:52 AM

Y'know, I wasn't really sure whether that had anything to do with it or not, but it does royally suck to have to use a workaround just to move from one room to another. -Les

What happens if you just select "Materials" from the Render menu?

sixus1 ( ) posted Fri, 14 August 2009 at 1:24 PM

that isn't as unstable but it's not fool proof either. -Les

Online Now!

I have only had one crash with a scene generated in PoserPro and opened in P8.  But that was due to an accidental double-click.  Haven't had any problems since then.

grichter ( ) posted Fri, 14 August 2009 at 2:33 PM

Has to be a win only problem. Because I go in and out of the Material room constantly on my mac with no issues.

As do I. And it doesn't matter how I do it.

I'm also running windows XP Home and haven't had any material room problems. I'm afraid of Vista and probably won't buy a new computer until Windows 7 has been out for a while.  I know someone who has Vista and it seems to be more trouble than necessary when it come to running programs. Hopefully windows 7 will be a better operating system.

I run Poser8 on Windows 7 RC 64 bit maybe this causes the problems. I´m not willing to go back to XP because Windows 7 is so much better allthough it´s not the final version, can´t wait until I get my preordered copy in October.

mackis3D ( ) posted Sat, 15 August 2009 at 3:27 PM

I also have the problem with the material room. Crashes and before it does it changes to tabs that I never opened. Windows XP Professional 64 bit. Since Vista users  and Windows 7 users know the problem too I guess it has nothing to do with the OS you are running.

Did not know about the workaround, thanks for the information!

lowpoly ( ) posted Sat, 15 August 2009 at 3:56 PM

Using XP Pro, problem seemed to start after autoupdate from Windows Update Service.
I use check point restore to go back somewhere it works.  Then Poser 8 say that I don't have Flash Player.  So I make sure to deinstall any Flash Players hanging around and down load new one direct from Adobe.

Fixes problem for me!

aeilkema ( ) posted Sat, 15 August 2009 at 3:58 PM

I've got those problems also, but I'm on WinXP Home. Sent in the report to SM and they're trying to find a solution. I would encourage everyone with this problem to do the same.

I don't have any problems getting into or out of the material room, but when a scene starts to get fairly big it will crash when selecting individual materials. Also I've noticed it feels a bit unstable around the materials room, I don't know, it just feels a bit jumpy when clicking anything, a bit of a lag then a sudden catch-up. I'm on Vista Home Premium 32.

aeilkema ( ) posted Wed, 19 August 2009 at 6:50 AM

I've noticed something about this crash. For me it only happens when I open a scene though the file menu >>> recent files.

When i open a scene the normal way, through the file menu >>> open and select the scene, then the crash doesn't happen at all. If I do use recent files, then it happens constantly.

Reported this to SM, but perhaps some else can confirm this or not?

SM isn't convinced this is a bug, they've suggested a number of things (mainly system / OS related), but none worked. They think it may have something to do with a non US windows, which sounds very odd to me.....

With regards to the menu selection I can update a little on the problem I found with my insallation:-

Once in the material room I can select any texture in the scene using the picker tool from the preview window without causing any problems, however if I use the drop down menu to select a material it will 'sometimes' crash. I had the crashing problem with the Lola texture set from Daz, I was able to select any other texture in the scene from the drop down menu except the Lola ones. But I could with the picker tool ?????

SM says as they were 3rd party textures they are probably to blame :) Maybe so but they run fine in Poser 7 and every other application I have so something needs tidying up in Poser 8 whether they like it or not.

Also I find that when in the Render window there's a lot of junk behind the render window where the screen hasn't refreshed. It's not a showstopper but it looks pretty awful :)

Finally I want to make it clear that I think Poser 8 is pretty terrific with some great improvements, I've been doing the 3D thing long enough to know that any application never meets perfection till after a service release or two :)

We know it's a bug, but need a reproducible case on a computer that our engineering team has access to, to debug it.

Trollzinho ( ) posted Wed, 19 August 2009 at 2:34 PM

My Poser 8 was crashing a lot, then someone told me it could be a OpenGL issue related to outdated video drivers, so I switched to SreeD software rendering and it worked just fine for the entire night. Now, this morning, still using SreeD, its crashing all the time.

Running Vista Home Premium. Could it be a Vista problem?

PS: I've updated my video drivers and still no improvements.

Happens to me too. Most of my crashes are because of that little drop down menu. Funny how yesterday after I switched to SreeD (preview rendering) it worked for hours of intense usage without a single crash.

Grimmley ( ) posted Wed, 19 August 2009 at 3:26 PM

I'm on Vista Home Premium too and those drop down menu crashes are random for me, it's worked fine ever since I had the problem with the Lola package, even the Lola textures are selecting via the drop down menu today. I also have the latest Nvidia drivers, I had them installed before I got Poser 8 though so it's not them. If a scene runs ok in Poser 7 then it should run in Poser 8.

I just tried out the cloth room tonight, whoo hoo it's a step up from what I'm used to in Poser 7 :) Very fast and smooth running, I'll be using that more often!

Trollzinho ( ) posted Wed, 19 August 2009 at 3:30 PM

Hey, I lowered the preview window quality to not show textures, and it didn't crash yet... I know it looks terrible but if it really solves the crashes I'm going with it until they release a service pack. Try it and post back here your results if you can.
