Apparently it's caused as the plane flies through the point where air heated by the land meets the cooler sea air and meets the remains of a few clouds.

Those are actually prop vortices. They become visible because of a sudden change in pressure caused by the moving propeller which causes the moisture in the air to briefly condense and become visible. If the air is very dry, you'll never see them. In England it is seen more often. You can also see vortices emanating from wing tips, and sometimes the entire wings are enveloped making you think you're flying through cloud if you are inside the aircraft. That's what is happening in the last photo.

I have seen quite dramatic effects off the wings of  military jets at air shows.  Thanks for capturing this in photos. The prop plane effects I have not seen previously.

I've been to many airshows in my life (as an Air Force brat) and seeing things like that always add to the event. :)

Fred255 -I wasn't too sure until I could review these properly if they had worked or not. The flightine is further away than usual, so getting a full frame even on the trusty 500 was difficult at times. Though I did manage a few, like with the Red Arrows shot below.  Standing on a pebbly beach with a five year old is also tricky, if you're not falling over, your assistant wants to go for a paddle :)    

Wayne - it's nice to have exact accurate information. I was reviewing the shots going home on the train and the guy sitting next to us said told us what said in the 1st post.  

Tom - I've seen them as well, but never managed to capture them before getting the Sony and the big lens, the shutter on the fuji F6500 was just too slow. I'm not saying that was slow, but by the time the picture was taken, the plane had landed and the pilot was having his dinner :)   

Two Pynts - oh yes. Especially the afterburners and that roar!! Though I didn't catch many of those shots (apart from 1 here) as the little un wasn't too keen on  fast jets, and tended to grab hold of your legs in fright!

BTW - if you want a nice little gadget for photography, you should try one of those tiny netbooks, the ones with a 10in screen. I borrowed one for this event to use as a storage device and also for something to do with little un while on a longish train journey. 

Compared to a standard laptop it's seriously lighter, fits nicely in a camera rucksack and the battery life is a lot longer - around 2 hours even with a card reader. 

It's a shame I could not get down there I'd have loved to have a go at photographing some of these.  It's only a couple of hours from home,  OH well maybe next year.

We've been for the last 5 years and every year it seems to get better. The best bit is the people that run the show, it's not like Farnbrough with it goons and miserable coporate types, but genuine friendly people..

One year I asked the lady at the airports information desk in the terminal if the cafe had power sockets - so I could charge my Vidcam up  - expecting to be ejected or charged a fiver like in most places, she took the camera and offered to charge it up. Then apologised she couldn' t do for it 5 minutes as she was booking in a flight!!   

This year I called them because a disabled friend is coming with us, and they sent us a free car pass (so the taxi can access the airfield) and lots of information.
