Subject: Sketch Animation – WHY WON’T YOU WORK!

ClawShrimp ( ) posted Mon, 24 August 2009 at 3:10 AM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 9:49 PM

Hello all. Not sure if anyone else has had this problem. I’m having issues rendering out a short, experimental animation using the Sketch renderer in Poser 8.

I had tried doing the same on both Poser 6 and Poser 7, but had issues with the system either refusing to render animations (Poser 6) or constant crashing (Poser 7).

I initially put this down to poor performance on my then aging laptop. I have since however bought a shiny new laptop, and installed the shiny new Poser 8, thinking I would finally be able to render the animation I’d been waiting 12 months for. Unfortunately I have had crash upon crash, usually at around frame 18 of my animation.

To say I’m disappointed is an understatement. Why hasn’t this been fixed?!

To clarify, it's not that Poser 6 wouldn't render animations...it's that it wouldn't render 'Sketch' animations. It insisted on rendering only 'Firefly' or 'Preview'.

Hi
are you sure your render settings for a sketch render  animation are set correctly in poser-6??
they should look like this.

Thanks for the response.

I now no longer have Poser 6 installed, so I can't test if it was in fact user error...although it is entirley possible.

My problem with Poser 8 however is not, as I can very plainly see it sketch-rendering the first dozen frames or so before it inevitably dies.

It's not that my scene is too complex either. I've ran test renders of only 30 frames, with a single figure (Freak 4). It STILL crashes.

I resent the fact that I might need to render out each frame individually and assemble them in another package. I shouldn't have to...should I?

Hi
there is No technical  reason you have to render individual frames its a workflow/post production choice many make .
but you should be able to render to a an AVI or whatever so it may actually be a P8 Bug
perhaps a fellow P8 user can try to duplicate the error
I hope you get it sorted out soon.

What AVI codec are you rendering to? It could be a memory issue with whatever video codec you're trying to use to encode the AVI with. Have you tried alternative codecs when given the encoding dialog?

ClawShrimp ( ) posted Wed, 26 August 2009 at 12:37 AM

LostInSpaceMan...that's a really good idea that hadn't even occurred to me.

I've been rendering using whatever the default codec is, but I'll try something else and see if it fixes the problem.

To test this, I've now attempted the animation using ALL possible video formats...and it still crashes!

If someone else has Poser 8, and you have a free moment, could you test this? If it's just me, I'll happily accept that (and attempt to figure out the problem). If it's a problem with Poser 8, I can then provide this as feedback to Smith Micro.

Cheers!

I've just successfully rendered a 105-frame animation with P8's sketch renderer, outputting to AVI format with the HuffYUV codec.  I'm using the Windows version of the application.

Does it also crash when you render as an image sequence?

ClawShrimp ( ) posted Thu, 27 August 2009 at 12:36 AM

Thanks Little Dragon.

No, it doesn't crash when rendered as an image...just when it's an animation.

I should probably tell you I'm running Vista, which could be the cause of my woes. :)

Back to the drawing board!
