Subject: What object editor for minor object changes?

Crowning ( ) posted Fri, 28 August 2009 at 6:24 AM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 2:06 AM

G'day,
from time to time I like to make small corrections to existing objects before I import them to Vue, mostly breaking objects into smaller parts for easier material handling later on...
I'm on a PC, WinXP Prof 32 bit.

So far I've tested a lot of free software, but most of the time they do either not import the format of choice (mostly .obj) or do not export something Vue can read. Or, in the case of Caligari, made my brain spin because of the VERY unusual user interface.

So, what do you recommend for some quick 3d edits?

it should be

  • easy to use, because I won't use it very often
  • should import .obj format and export something Vue can read
  • because I don't need it very often preferably free, or in the sub $50 range

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Tom

Wings 3D is very easy to use, has a good helpful forum here and it is free.

you should have a look at hexagon from daz studios, you can get it free with a book (cant remember which one off the top of my head!)

loads of tutorials on geek at play for it, its pretty straight forward, imports and exports .obj and a bunch of others too.

have a look on daz 3ds site, ill try and remember/find the book with it in

While it's not free SILO is better IMO.

The name of the book Rich Potter is referring to is Figures, Characters and Avatars: The Official Guide to Using DAZ Studio to Create Beautiful Art and here the link:

In addition to Hexagon, you also get Carrara 6 Pro.

Wings 3D seems to not like my PC, when I try to modify mid-sized object I can do a couple of edits and than it hangs.
But I'll keep it bookmarks to test upcoming versions.

Thanks a lot for the link.

Thanks a lot to both of you. It's about 18 Euro here in Europe. I've already ordered it.
For that prize it can't be bad .

Beware of modifying UV mapped stuff - if you add or delete verts, it's quite easy to wreck the mapping (speaking from experince  )
Just moving stuff around should be ok but watch out for texture stretching.

I use Hexagon 1.21 for importing OBJ, editing, and exporting OBJ.  Works great with Vue Infinite.  I have both programs open at the same time.  Silo 2.1.1 is my other choice.
