Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 31 9:45 am)
Never mind.. I reinstalled it..
Still.. I'd like to know WHERE that ini file is.. because It DID remember certain things.. like my name and it also is still listing the version number from AFTER the Hotfix.. - eventhough I didn't yet apply it :???:

What OS are you using?
In Vista it is located at
C:UsersUserNameAppDataRoamingPoser8.0 = UserName = "Your User Name"
In WinXP Pro it is located at:
C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorApplication DataPoser8.0 = "Administrator" or possibly "Your User Name"

When you do your original installation there is a popup asking you where you want your stuff installed to...if you leave it at the default setting it goes to your DocumentsAndSettings:AllUsers:SharedDocuments:Poser8Content
If you want it installed in the standard spot ProgramFiles:SmithMicro:Poser8
then you have to select that upon installation.
Hope this helps.

mariner - I use Vista, but it's not there. Probably because I did NOT install it there, I installed it, like all my other Poser versions, on an external drive. I don't like things cluttering up my C: - that is for the OS and only the OS.
In C:Users[my name]AppDataRoaming, there's no "Poser" folder. There's a Poser 7 folder (two in fact, one with a date string attached...) but no Poser or Poser 8.
And another thing.. this may be totally coincidental.. but Explorer crashed every time I clicked "Roaming" - I had to go in from a Dos box in the end...
I have User Control switched off and I'm using the Administrator account all the time.
And nruddock.. yes I know it's a known bug :) I reported it and was told they were already working on it. And that the solution here and now was to use the default location and delete the line in the Poser.ini
Thing is.. there IS no Poser.ini on my computer. I've searched for it with GoogleDesktop as well as Windows' built in search. All the Poser.inis it finds are from Poser 5, 6 and 7.
Again, the reinstall worked and for now I am grudingly allowing Poser to put its TEMP crap on my precious C:
But.. where's that .ini gone? :( Obviously it is here SOMEWHERE or Poser wouldn't be able to find neither head nor arse of itself.. and it does.. but... Hm...

On my Vista it's in:
C:UsersTedAppDataRoamingPoser8.0
Along with LibraryPrefs.xml and LibraryState.xml. When you get SR1, this will also be the location of LibraryViews.xml.
You have a mystery, TG. It can't be elsewhere. Hidden folder perhaps? Maybe it's marked as a System folder and you don't have "Show OS magical important folders" turned on?
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
But I have "show hidden folders" on. They're grey but still visible. And as I said I went in through a DOS box.. there IS no Poser. If I do a DIR there's no AppData either (probably hidden) but I can CD.. my way to it anyway. Just not Poser...

I installed all of Poser 8's content to my external runtimes drive on E: (Option 4 of the choices given at install time I believe) and my Poser.INI file is here:
C:UsersSteveAppDataRoamingPoser8.0
If you chose to let others use your Poser 8 when you installed it it might have gone into:
C:UsersDefaultAppDataRoamingPoser8.0
I already checked the Default folder. It isn't there either :(
Now this is really getting on my nerves. I mean.. it must BE here somewhere...
But where?!

I can find the libraryprefs.xml. But that's not the same as Poser.ini is it?
And I thought Poser didn't write anythng to the registry really? Isn't that why you can run Poser off any external disk (and a CD, I've done so in the past)
I'm really puzzled. If everybody else has a Poser.ini that belongs to Poser 8, then I want one, too!

I am able to save my preferences, so yes, there MUST be an .ini somewhere. But I can't find it. I've searched the computer for occurrences of Poser.ini and while it finds my Poser 5, 6 and 7 .inis.. there's none that is in anway (at least apprently) related to Poser 8.
Weird, isn't it?

No. I looked there as well.
As I said, I did a search. Both with GoogleDesktop, which I have running, and with the normal Windows search feature. It isn't anywhere. But then how can Poser save my preferences? And it does...
Perhaps.. it's... magic?
I'm starting to believe in it at least LOL

Hi!
Just a suggestion, on my system when i search for poser.ini when standing at"C:Documents and SettingsAuto" I cant find it.
If I stand at "C:Documents and SettingsAutoApplication Data" I can find poser.ini through the search function.
I looked at the security settings for "C:Documents and Settings" and opposite from what I believed i dont have admin rigths to that folder.
Have you tried doing a window search lower in the hierarchy?
Regards / Jonny
You are in Vista?
Sometimes, when searching, you have to go into 'advanced search' and set search in
'non-indexed' files.
I've unchecked index on most of my folders. It actually seems to speed up file browsing.

For example, if I'm working in Poser and get materials applied to an imported obj and then save it as a prop, Vista doesn't put it into Poser's props folder, but rather into a compatibility files folder which is associated with the Poser props folder. You can move things from compatibility files into the regular folder manually.
It's no longer an issue for me, as I've moved my Poser Pro downloads/runtime out to the Poser 8 downloads folder in the shared files, where Vista doesn't challenge me every time I add/delete something. Poser Pro and Poser 8 now both use this library.
P.S. I'd not know how compatibility files was translated into Danish, but hopefully the icon will match.

There are seperate settings for show hidden files and show system files. Unfortunetly I'm not near a Vista machine right now so I can't say exactly how to get to it.
Worst case, download FileMon: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896642.aspx
It will log every file access on your system. You can set a filter like ("Poser") to reduce the volume of results. If Poser if opening, closing, reading or writing to a file, FileMon will show it.

OK I just deleted thw whole string of /p8/p8/p8..ect in my temp folder.. and now Poser 8 can't start. Obviously because it's looking for a temp path that is no longer there...
Thing is.. It should be in the Poser.ini as far as I've been told.. but I have no Poser.ini in my Poser 8 installation.
I can find the Poser 5, 6 and 7 "Poser.ini's" but not one in Poser 8
Is it called something else? Where should I look? There's a DefaultPoser8.ini but all that is in there is where the content folder is placed...
I tried restoring it from the recycling bin, but since I've restarted Poser a few times in the mean time the number of 8.0's probably doesn't fit the number Poser has in whereever the .ini is...
HELP!
