Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 21 6:06 am)
Just spamming the refresh button will keep listing a different # of files in the library folders. I tried reinstalling P8, the hot fix, P8 without the hot fix... installed flash player provided with P8 installer, updated from the website...
nothing seems to fix it. Makes poser pretty useless at the moment :/
The internal code of Poser 8 does not handle memory allocations correctly regarding the library. The error was there under 10.5. 10.6 using a completely different allocation system (Grand Central Dispatch) magnifies the problem. After a crash don't look at the crash log. Look at your console log. the Console.app is found in Applications:Utilities. It will have a bunch of allocation errors related to P8. It appears to have to do with folder found. If you take for example the P8 default installed runtime, without the legacy content, it has 3 folders in the figures. You can refresh that all day long and P8 will not crash. I did a boat load of testing on my own, with nesting folders and reducing their counts and so forth. much over about 20-25 folders even in a sub folder and you are going to crash. For SM to make the statement that P8 works on SL on their support site, I will bet they never tested beyond the default content install. Whomever at SM approved P8 under SL, should face NVITWS and if they are a guy have the sword do something I feel is appropriate between their legs.

Stop saying it has something to do with Flash. It has nothing to do with Flash.
I can't understand how I can write about the same bug every day and people don't see it.
grichter is correct - there is a bug in the C++ code inside Poser dealing with memory for the purpose of collecting and sending the contents of a folder to the GUI.
It is not the GUI, so re-installing Flash or anything similar is a huge waste of time. NOTHING YOU CAN DO WILL FIX IT.
Hitting refresh just exercises the bad part some more. It's like a gun that occasionally shoots you in the head. If you pull the trigger more often, you'll just make it more likely to shoot you in the head.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
LOL BB, well I knew it was written in flash since i get the flash menu on right click. I tried searching P8 library problems but I pretty much fail at finding anything relevant to my issue.
Hopefully they get a fix out soon. I love the new poser and I got work to do. I don't wanna go back to the old stuff !
BB -- I can't keep up with all your posts on on many different threads. Your last reply to a post of mine was that you had nothing to do with this aspect of the library, and to report it to SM. When I did, I learned that they were aware the Library was not listing full contents under Snow Leopard, though they didn't mention a bug in the C++ code. I was also told that Flash might be involved in the crashing, though not the faulty listing of items, if the version of Flash was an older version. I would have been glad to get the answer from you the first time, but you seem exasperated by the question (as you still do) and sent me to SM.
I understand the frustration with the same questions over and over again. So many different threads. Those who paid for their P8 are frustrated too. Undiscovered bugs upon release are to be expected. I still suggest a Sticky thread with answers to the repeated questions, where answers exist.
imax,
Sounds to me like maybe I need to make sure that SM is answering this clearly. It was I that found the symptoms with the help of somebody in this forum, I reported the problem to SM, the SM engineer involved poked around his code and found the actual mistake. He told me about the mistake, and CC'd other people. I assumed that the information found its way back out the front door to you and others who experience this problem. And it is a serious problem as it not only wrecks your library listing, it is trashing things in memory, resulting in crashing. Were I in charge, I probably would have issued a Hot Fix for Mac immediately. But I'm not in charge.
Yep, I acknowledge I'm exasperated on this particular bug. Sorry. I feel like half the posts I write over the last 10 days are about this one issue. Half of the remaining half are defending myself from people getting upset that I'm exasperated. :) grin

The symptons of the Leopard vs the Snow Leopard issue are different, though they may be linked, the Leopard one results are totally different.
What people are seeing in Snow Leopard is not dependant on the number of Folders as it is in Leopard, it will also occur with the default Poser 8 Content Folders and has been confirmed.

One has to question why in the world Smith Micro would make the statement on their support page and still makes the statement as this morning when they have confirmed that P8 does not work under Snow Leopard!
Titles that will have NO issues at all. Poser 7, Poser 8, and Poser Pro (we do not support ANY older versions on 10.6)
found here item number 4

Even PoserPro has crashing issues with Snow Leopard and Grand Central Dispatch that it didn't have under Leopard.

You'd be quite the silly goose to think someone - anyone - can release a piece of software and truly guarantee zero bugs.
I think what that statement on their site meant is that overall, everything will install, shouldn't get any outstanding errors that completely halt any use of the software.
Granted randomly generated incomplete library listings really put a dent in the time it takes you to work, it doesn't 100% stop all ability to use the software.

I beg to differ, as a simple refresh of the library crashes the program. There are many many posts here and elsewhere that state the same experience. P8 under SL does not run. It crashes constantly.

a hotfix would be really really nice actually...
I aim to update it about once a month. Oh, and it's free!
Could this have to do with the fact that Snow Leopard installed an earlier version of Flash? http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/171437/snow_leopard_prefers_flawed_version_of_flash.html. I don't use a Mac (tho' I'm thinking of switching over) - does upgrading to the latest version of Flash fix it? Or does Snow Leopard not allow that?
Updating to the latest version of Flash does NOT fix the incomplete P8 library problem, and BB has said Flash has nothing to do with items failing to appear in the library. It is a coding error that is much worse under Snow Leopard, though some have found the problem to a lesser degree under Leopard while using p8,
I politely differ with the person above who said the library problem does not stop you from using P8. It does if the figures, props, poses or lights you need just refuse to show up in the library. Click Refresh enough times and you might eventually see what you need among the truncated list, but you also might very well crash before that happens.
For now I am composing scenes in P7 and switching to P8 for the fast render.
Hot fix. Hot fix. Hot fix!
Uli's going to get really pissed at me now.
I hope you guys know I'm not SM's shill. They get really mad at me sometimes. Hehehe.

Though I did not test it on the Seed Version of Snow Leopard, I can say the issue does not happen for me, unless I click on Refresh a few times. That is how I can duplicate the reported issue. Until I click on Refresh, my Libraries appear to be fully there. It took a user that was reporting the issue that after updating their Flash indicated all was good, only to write back a bit later indicating that they now got corruption of the library when they clicked refresh. That was the key.
I can still launch Poser 8, and my Library appears complete, until I start clicking Refresh. Other than that one issue (which is a big issue) Poser functions without any problems. You can add content, Pose, Render...
I am sure this is on the top of the lists of new issues and if not already fixed, it will be a priority.

I'm not entirely sure whats going on. I do like the new library but one huge flaw is - sometimes items aren't listed. I click refresh, it'll show some, and take some away. I didn't notice this happening on 10.5.7/8 but I upgraded to 10.6 last week and now I've got some work to do and I'm noticing stuff randomly goes missing and forcing refreshes won't list the entire folder contents :/
Anyone else had this problem?
